Starter Lesson Plan Format

Adaptation of Gradual Release of Responsibility (Direct Instruction Model)

Name of component Who is doing the work? What is being done in the component?
Teacher Teacher provides:
Input - the information students need to know to do the lesson
Input/Purpose Purpose - the rationale for the lesson (how this will benefit student/what student
will learn from this lesson)

Teacher Teacher demonstrates what is to be done during the lesson and thinks aloud
while demonstrating to make visible the thought process involved
Modeling

Teacher Teacher and students work together to do another example of the lesson
Shared Practice Students *not identical to what was modeled but another one like it
(aka Guided Practice)

Students Students work with another student or students to do another example of the
Peer Practice lesson
(also known as Teacher observes and provides assistance as needed
Collaborative Practice)

Students Student works alone to do another example of what was modeled and practiced
Teacher to demonstrate that s/he has gained knowledge about what was taught
Independent Practice Teacher monitors/oversees/facilitates/evaluates
