ABSTRACT
Today’s society has everyone looking for a way to create products

quickly, efficiently, and inexpensively, without jeopardizing quality.

Throughout these years, drill machines have gone under a number of

transformations. High-tech drill press machines are more complex to use but

offer better functionality. As the development of drilling and a variety of

technologies evolve, the effectiveness of manufacturing processes and

systems have vastly improved. The implementation of automation is a prime

example of this advancement.

The study was to design a portable drill press by using a gear motor by

the means of long lead screw which drives as a feed rate of the design and

evaluate the efficiency of Automatic Portable Drill Press compared in using

the hand drill.

Automated systems essentially remove human effort from working

process bringing about a number of benefits. The project involved in

automatic portable drill press by just pressing a switch that will work as a

feed to the materials and reverse it upward. The design serves as a means of

saving time while increasing the safety, efficiency and precision of drilling

holes.

CHAPTER 1: THE PROBLEM AND A REVIEW OF RELATED

LITERATURE

Introduction

Industries as of today utilize drill presses to drill holes on a work

piece with little to no effort. They make drilling holes quick and efficient

with some designs opting for a multiple spindle type design. However, there

is one thing that is common amongst these machines and that is its non-

portability. Drill presses are heavy and bulky by design with some weighing

almost 20 kilograms, depending on the kind of motor used.

Most of the drill presses are manually operated; it is one of the most

important machine tools in a workshop. It was designed to produce a

cylindrical hole of required diameter and depth on metal work pieces.

Though holes can be made by different machine tools in a shop, drilling

machine is designed specifically to perform the operation of drilling and

similar operations. Drilling can be done easily at a low cost in a shorter

period of time in a drilling machine.

From those ideas, the researchers had decided to build an automatic

drill press that doesn’t need a hand press wheel. The bulk and heavy drill

press will be converted into portable ones. It consists of base, column that is
11

mounted vertically upon the base. It is accurately machined with a hand drill

press at the middle. It consists of two dynamos at the side that is fixed at the

hand drill press. The two dynamos will work as an up and down. The hand

drill will be connected to the switch that will automatically turn on with the

switch that connected to the motor to rotate up and down with the mean of

long screw.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

A drilling machine is one of the most important machine tools in a

workshop. It was designed to produce a cylindrical hole of required diameter

and depth on metal work pieces. Though holes can be made by different

machine tools in a shop, drilling machine is designed specifically to perform

the operation of drilling and similar operations, easily with no problems and

efficiently requiring little effort made. Drilling can be called as the operation

of producing a cylindrical hole of required diameter and depth by removing

metal by the rotating edges of a drill. The cutting tool known as drill is fitted

into the spindle of the drilling machine. A mark of indentation is made at the

required location with a center punch. The rotating drill is pressed at the

location and is fed into the work. The hole can be made up to a required

depth.[1]
12

The drilling operation can also be accomplished in lathe, in which the

drill is held in tailstock and the work is held by the chuck, but this will cost

more, since many local and growing industries have no lathe machine and if

also there is a lathe it’s preferable to do other machining operations rather

than drilling.

Drill presses for occasional use in general-purpose machine shops

usually have only one spindle. For drilling several holes successively or

simultaneously in a work piece, machines with multiple spindles are

available. When large quantities of identical mechanical components are

required, special-purpose drilling machines, with spindles arranged in a

variety of positions relative to the work piece, can be constructed. Although

drill presses are used mainly for drilling holes, they can also be used for

enlarging holes with a boring tool or finishing holes with a reamer. With the

aid of a special tapping attachment and a tap, they can produce threads in a

hole. [2]

Multiple-spindle drilling machines are used for mass production, a

great time saver where many pieces of jobs having many holes are to be

drilled. Multi-spindle head machines are used in mechanical industry in

order to increase the productivity of machining systems. This machine has

two spindles driven by a single motor and all the spindles are fed in to the
13

work piece simultaneously. Feeding motions are obtained either by raising

the work table or by lowering the drills head. As the name indicates multiple

spindle drilling machines have two spindles driven by a single power head,

and these two spindles holding the drill bits are fed into the work piece

simultaneously. The spindles are so constructed that their center distance can

be adjusted in any position within the drill head depending on the job

requirement. The positions of those parallel shafts holding the drills are

adjusted depending upon the locations of the holes to be made on the job.

Hazim El-Mounayri, Zakir Dugla, and Haiyan Deng (2009) developed

a model in End Milling by using worm gear. From the studies, data collected

from CNC cutting experiments using Design of Experiments approach. Then

the data obtained were used for calibration and validation. The inputs to the

model consist of Feed, Speed and Depth of cut. The model is validated

through a comparison of the experimental values with their predicted

counterparts. A good agreement is found from this research. The proved

technique opens the door for a new, simple and efficient approach that could

he applied to the calibration of other empirical models of machining. [3]

Hun-Keun Chang (2006) established a method to rotate the drill head

using robotics. In their research, roughness of machined surface was

assumed to be generated by the relative motion between tool and work piece
14

and the geometric factors of a tool. A simple linear model was developed to

predict drill head rotation. Surface roughness was predicted from the

displacement signal of spindle motion. Prediction model had prediction

accuracy of about 95%. Based on the literature review, the most parameters

that widely considered when investigating the operation of a machine are

feed rate, spindle speed and depth of cut. Most of the researches didn’t

consider the uncontrolled parameters, such as tool geometry, tool wear, chip

loads, and chip formations, or the material properties of both tool and work

piece. [4]

WORKING PRINCIPLE

The working operation of this portable drilling machine is initially

started from the hand drill press. Power source. In this, there is one power

sources, received from the power supply or battery. After that the switch is

controlled, to fix speed of the drill. The hand drill is attached to the middle

with the means of two motor that is connected at both sides to drive the hand

drill press up and down. According to the requirement of drilling it will feed

precisely. The up and down motion of the driven hand drill press is given to

the rotary motor with a long screw. This rotary motion is both connected to

the switch that controls the rotation of the hand drill press and the dynamo.
15

The depth of cut will be adjusted by switch button that control the

rotary reverse motor for going up and down. The wiring at the switch that

connects to the one dynamo will be reversely connected, to reverse its

rotation. After that motor is started the desire speed is fixed then drilling

process is performed.

Cutting motion

The cutting motion in drilling machines is attained by rotating the drill

at different speeds (rpm.). Like Centre lathes, milling machines etc. Drilling

machines also need to have a reasonably large number of spindle speeds to

cover the useful ranges of work material, tool material, drill diameter,

machining and machine tool conditions. It is that the drill gets its rotary

motion from the hand drill press.

Feed motion

In drilling machines, generally both the cutting motion and feed

motion are imparted to the drill. Like cutting velocity or speed, the feed

(rate) also needs varying (within a range) depending upon the tool-work

materials and other conditions and requirements. The drill receives its feed

motion from the output shaft through the feed gear box (FGB), and the

clutch. But for our design the feed rate can be controlled by the pushed

button. And the automatic feed direction can be reversed, when required, by
16

operating the speed reversal mechanism of the reversed motor. The slow

rotation of the pinion causes the axial motion of the drill by just simply

pressing the up and down button.

Tool work

The taper shank drills are fitted into the taper hole of the spindle either

directly or through taper socket(s). Small straight shank drills is fitted

through a drill chuck having taper shank. The work piece is kept rigidly

fixed on the bed (of the table). Small jobs are generally held in vice and

large or odd shaped jobs are directly mounted on the bed by clamping tools

using the T-slots.

Synthesis and Justification.

Drill presses are general purpose machines that could be commonly be

seen on machine workshops. Due to their design they are bulky and less

portable. The researchers proposed to this study to make drill presses

portable and less bulky, and at the same time use less expensive materials

than what drill presses are usually made of.

17

Theoretical Framework

The implementation of innovative technologies not only reduces cost

significantly but also reduces the manpower requirement while increasing

the effectiveness of drill pressing. Reduced human requirement means less

money used to pay workers, and funds would be directed on something else.

Small steps in the technological advancement like this will not only have a

higher impact in the long run but also make drill pressing more efficient.

Project construction is quick, simple, and effective. The construction

is rigid and requires a motor to run it.

18

Conceptual Framework
19

Figure 1: Conceptual Framework

1. GATHERING OF DATA & DESIGNING

The researchers gathered first the data needed for the design. Then

designing starts with AutoCAD. The design first is drawn and simulated.

Then afterwards the design calculations are done in order to avoid failure of

the design. Then a material is selected. The material selected is plate iron.

This material is chosen in order to have a better durability.

2. FABRICATION

After the design and selection of material. The design then is

implemented. The proponents were able to produce the base of the portable

automatic drill press. Then the components are assembled.

The following are the process on how the prototype is created:

 SUPPORTING BODY SET UP

It is consisted of base, column, and a working table. The base will

support the whole body to stand and the column will be the body of the

design connected with the working table. The working table will be place for

material to be drilled.
20

 HAND DRILL and ROTARY REVERSE MOTOR ASSEMBLY

The hand drill is attached to a slider which is fixed with the horizontal

bar at the bottom part of the hand drill, which will connect to the long screw

at both sides. The two rotary reverse motors are fixed on the both sides with

the long screw that will connect to the horizontal bar, as the rotary motors

rotates the hand drill, will go up nor down with the mean of the slider

connected on it.

 SWITCH BUTTONS and WIRE CONNECTIONS

All parts are now assembled here including the body part and the head

part. Now the wire is connected at the main switch that controls either it will

go up or down. The two rotary motor will connect to the push button in

clockwise and counter clockwise rotation. The main supply to rotate the

rotary motors will be the battery.

 FINAL ASSEMBLY OF PORTABLE AUTOMATIC DRILL

PRESS

All parts are now assembled here including the body part, head part

and the wiring and ready to be used. Now the switch will be turned on and

testing will begin.

21

3. EVALUATION & TESTING

After successfully producing the prototype model of the Automatic

Portable Drill Press. The finished product was then rested through operating

functions. Then after testing, a satisfactory survey was given to students and

instructors of UC main, in order to be able to tell the response of the finished

product. Lastly, a follow up survey was conducted for the evaluation of the

performance of the automatic portable drill press to know if the prototype

was still working and didn’t fail.

Figure 2.1: Research Process

One of the most important parts in making a designed project is

presenting and acquiring sufficient knowledge about the design you’re going

to make. So, the first step that will be done by the researchers is that they

will have to gather first enough information by reading articles and

literatures about the topics in line with their own design project.

After all the gathering of sufficient information, the researchers will

come up with a plan and decide on how the project should be performed.

Then after that, design project implementation and testing come next in

order to find if it’s going to work or not, and satisfy the goals of the project.

If unfortunately, the design has failed to meet the goals, the researchers will

have to test again and figure out why it failed.

Then if the project succeeds and the goals have been achieved, a

conclusion will be provided as the final outputs, and final design of the

project which will be named “PORTABLE AUTOMATIC DRILL PRESS”.

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION OF THE

DATA

Effectiveness of a Portable Automatic Drill Press. A drill is a tool

primarily used for making round holes but there is a various type in drilling

the holes which will impact the effectiveness in drilling the hole.

Characteristics:

 Accuracy in the drilling will drill at a precise and tightly consistent

angle, particularly 90 degrees’ perpendicular and can be set to stop at

a precise depth.

 Ability to apply carefully controlled drilling pressure, including hard

and brittle items. Since the rotation of the mounted motor to the long

screw is 160 rpm which will serve as the penetration movement down.

 A smaller power, torque is available in the mounted motor than one

you can hand hold

 Can be used with center less bits such as plug cutters which are

impossible to use with hand held drills.

Fabricated Automatic Drill Press is more on;

Accuracy. The accuracy for using a Drill Press is higher because it ensures

stability at the right angle the results in accurate and equal holes. It can lock

the hand drill to the center place.

Functionality. A drill press can penetrate holes at slowly movement with

efficiency, while a hand drill may give inconvenience and its more

challenging.

Safe to Use. Safety is one of the best benefits of using a drill press. First, it

has a clamp used to hold the material in place. And you only focuses to the

control switches that control the feed to the holes.

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the summary and conclusion derived in the

conduct of the study which is to probe the effectiveness of the Portable Drill
44

Press as an alternative to the more conventional designs of drill presses

currently found on shops.

The study was conducted on University of Cebu - Main Campus. The

respondents were engineering students currently enrolled in Machine Shop 1

and 2 who are currently using the drill presses to complete their projects.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS

The findings of the study were summarized according to the statement

of the problem in Chapter 1.

45

1. Characterize the effectiveness of a portable automatic drill press at drilling

the hole.

The portable drill press accuracy in the drilling process was precise with a

tight consistent angle. It had the ability to apply carefully controlled drilling

pressure, including hard and brittle items. Has a smaller power, torque is available

in the mounted motor than one you can hand hold. And can be used with center

less bits such as plug cutters which are impossible to use with hand held drills.

2. Design a portable drill press that uses an automatic switch instead of

manually operated one.

The design was installed with a working automatic switch instead of a

manually operated one.

3. Determine if the design reduce the man power and efforts in drilling

operations.

The design reduced manpower usage during drilling operations.

4. Evaluate the accuracy in drilling process.

The drilling accuracy was on par with more conventional designs.

CONCLUSION

Based on the indicated findings, the following conclusions were

drawn:
46

1. There is a sign of effectiveness using the portable drill press over

the conventional designs found on shops.

2. There is drastic reduction of manpower usage when using the

portable drill press that is due to the installed automatic switch.

3. Accuracy of the drill press is also on par with the conventional drill

press with a slight margin of error.

4. The portable drill press also drills holes faster compared to

conventional designs.

5. There is a drastic change when using the portable drill press.

RECOMMENDATIONS
47

This study revealed the effectiveness of the portable drill press

compared to conventional drill presses found on shops. However, the

following recommendations are hereby presented to further improve the

design.

1. A small removable battery housing could be installed on design

which serves as a compartment for spare batteries for the hand drill in case

the hand drill losses power during straight drilling operations.

2. A much powerful hand-drill can also be used compared to the ones

used in the study.
