Problem 1:

The frame ABDF shown in the figure below is fixed at A and pinned at F. Assume 𝐸𝐸𝐸𝐸 =
2.133(105 ) kN. m2.

Using the force method and taking the reactions at F as redundants:

(1) Draw the bending moment diagram of the frame for the loading shown below.
(2) Determine the support reactions if the hinge support at F is replaced by two springs (one
horizontal, one vertical) with stiffnesses 𝑘𝑘𝑠𝑠 = 40 kN/mm.
Neglect axial and shear deformation.

Check your answers using SAP2000.

Problem 2:

The frame ADCEB shown in the accompanying figure is fixed at A and hinged at B. The frame is
strengthened by a tie ED as shown.

Assemble the flexibility matrix required for analysis of the frame. Use 𝑋𝑋𝐵𝐵 , 𝑌𝑌𝐵𝐵 (reactions at B) and 𝐹𝐹𝐷𝐷𝐷𝐷
(the force in the Tie DE) as redundants. Do not solve for the redundants.

Neglect axial deformation in all members except member DE. Use 𝐸𝐸𝐸𝐸 = 8000 t. m2 for the frame
elements, and 𝐸𝐸𝐸𝐸 = 20,000 tons for member DE.

Problem 3: [Optional]

The beam ABC shown in the figure below has a fixed support at A and roller supports at B and C.
Assume 𝐸𝐸 = 200 GPa and 𝐼𝐼 = 90(106 ) mm4.

Using the force method of analysis, and taking the reactions 𝑌𝑌𝐵𝐵 and 𝑌𝑌𝐶𝐶 as redundants:

(1) Draw the bending moment diagram of the beam for the distributed loading below
(2) Determine the slope at B
(3) Determine the support reactions if, in addition to the loading, support B settles by 1.5 cm
downwards.

Problem 4: [Optional]

The structure shown in the accompanying figure consists of a beam AB connected to the axial members
BC, CD, and CE. The composite system is loaded by 10 kips at joint C as shown.

Using the Flexibility Method of Analysis, determine the support reactions at A and the axial forces in
members BC, CD, and CE. Consider only the effect of bending in AB (neglect axial and shear
deformation), and consider only the effect of axial force in BC, CD, and CE (neglect flexural
deformation).

Check your answers using SAP2000.

Problem 5: [Optional]

A plane view of a grid of floor beams, resting on pillars at A, B, C, D, E, and F is shown in the
accompanying Figure [a]. Assuming the beams to have identical flexural rigidity, 𝐸𝐸𝐸𝐸, and zero torsional
rigidity, and neglecting axial and shear deformation:

[1] Using the Flexibility Method of analysis, analyze the grid system, given that the segment GH is
subjected to a uniformly distributed gravity load of 20 kN/m (Figure [b]). Draw the shearing force and
bending moment diagrams of beams CD and AB.

[2] Using the Flexibility Method of analysis, analyze the grid system, given that joint G is subjected to a
concentrated gravity load of 100 kN (Figure [c]). Draw the shearing force and bending moment diagrams
of beams CD and AB.

[3] How would you modify your solution if the stiffness 𝐸𝐸𝐸𝐸′ of beams CD and EF was much larger (say
infinitely larger) than the stiffness 𝐸𝐸𝐸𝐸 of beam AB. Only comment, do not solve.
