Importance of Singing

the Mass Texts
“In choosing the parts [of the Mass] actually to be
sung, preference is to be given to those that are of
greater importance and especially to those which are
to be sung by the Priest or the Deacon or a reader,
with the people replying, or by the Priest and people
together.”

-General Instruction of the Roman Missal, #40

(English translation according to the Third Typical Edition)

“The acclamations of the Eucharistic Liturgy and other
rites arise from the whole gathered assembly as
assents to God’s Word and action. The Eucharistic
acclamation include the Gospel Acclamation, the
Sanctus, the Mystery of Faith, and the Great Amen.
They are appropriately sung at any Mass, including
daily Mass and any Mass with a smaller congregation.
Ideally, the people should know the acclamations by
heart and should be able to sing them readily, even
without accompaniment.”

-Sing to the Lord: Music in Divine Worship, 155a.
(US Conference of Catholic Bishops)
Pastoral Considerations

•  How many Mass settings does your parish need?

•  What are the pastoral needs of your community?

•  Can a new Mass setting help your parishioners to
grow in their participation as a singing community?
Pastoral Considerations
•  What stylistic considerations do you need to be aware of?
–  Contemporary?
–  Traditional?
–  A blend of both?
•  How does your parish worship in song?
Consider the liturgical season

when planning out Mass settings

for the year.
Consider Mass settings that can be
sung by the choirs and assemblies

of ALL your weekend liturgies,
regardless of style.
What about multilingual Mass settings?

What about Latin Mass settings?
