HOW CAN WE HONOR
INDIGENOUS IDENTITY?
A DEBATE FOR SPORTS TEAMS TO REMOVE LOGOS THAT USE
INDIGENOUS LANGUAGE AND MASCOTS

CONCEPTS OF CITIZENSHIP AND IDENTITY ARE ROOTED

WITHIN THE SOCIAL STUDIES PROGRAM OF STUDY.
STUDENTS WILL DEVELOP SENSITIVITY TO PERSONAL
ASPECTS OF IDENTITY, UNDERSTAND INDIGENOUS WAYS OF
KNOWING, AND RESPECT THE LAND, PLACES AND PEOPLE
Recents events around the
world have sparked
conversation surrounding
racism and preserving cultural
identity. Both professional and
non-professional sports teams
at all levels are under a
microscope; examining and
sparking reflection around
team names, logos, and
mascots.
In Canada, Indigenous voices represent a call to remove slurs/mascots around
Indigenous culture to preserve, respect, and honour their identity.
And other voices
portray an
alternate
perspective-
“aren’t we
honoring their
name?”
This becomes a debate where pride meets prejudice.
After much
debate, the
former Edmonton
Eskimos are now
The Edmonton
Football Team.
Global News
reports that this
“contributes to
the monumental
work required to
dismantle
systemic racism”
(2020).
However, some Canadians believe the names deem notions community and respect.
Are all voices
heard? Are we
sensitive to
personal
aspects of
identity?
Social Studies curriculum invites students to develop
personal ideologies and contribute to the public good
Education has the opportunity to breakdown the complexity of identity formation in
Canadian context.
Canadians
acknowledge an
interconnected
relation to the land
and obligation to
respect that this
land has nourished,
protected, healed,
and embraced us.
The Program of
Studies actively
engages students
to make
informed
decisions and
participate fully
in society.
Recognizing the unique nature of Canada’s people, lands and history, allows
for dialogue and viewpoints from various perspectives.
Social Studies encourages students to welcome all perspectives, to
critically think about current issues, and form educated opinions.
