SAMPLE ANSWER 1: (band 9)

I would like to describe a coat my parents gave me as a present on my 18th birthday. I must say that it
is really smart and exactly to my liking.

The coat is made of cotton only and by a Vietnamese clothes brand. It is a knee-length black coat,
which was in fashion at that time. What I like the most is that there are two deep side pockets, so
in winter, I always put my hands into those pockets to avoid the cold. Besides, I can button the
coat from top to bottom and it’s also got a decorative waist belt. I am so fond of this coat that I usually
wear it every winter. It fits me perfectly and makes me feel comfortable and warm, no matter how
cold the weather is. I keep myself warm by wearing the coat with jeans and boots, which match it well.

In fact, I have never thought whether it will be out of fashion. As this coat is a gift from  my parents, I
treasure it a lot and – for sure – I will keep wearing this coat in the future.

VOCABULARY:
 really smart: [adjective] very clean, neat and attractive. Example: If you want to look good on special

which she has decorated my house is exactly

 decorative: [adjective] intended to look attractive, because of the way in which it is decorated.
Example: Many tourists visit the Temple of Literature because of the many decorative sculptures which
they can see there.
 fond of: [expression] finding something pleasant or enjoyable, especially something that you have liked
or enjoyed for a long time. Example: My uncle is an excellent musician, and he is very fond of his hobby.
 match: [verb] if things match each other, they have the same colour or style and therefore look attractive
together. Example: None of these shoes match my jeans – they are all very different and they are too
formal.
 treasure: [verb] have or keep something that you love and that is very valuable to you. Example: Thank
you for e-mailing the photos. They are superb and I will always treasure them and the memories that they
bring.
SAMPLE ANSWER 2

Ooh, my favourite item of clothing! I’m not much of a clothes horse to be honest, I’m not very interested
in fashion so at first, I thought this topic might be quite hard. However, I’ve thought of one that my best
friend gave me on my birthday party. I’ll tell you what it is, when and why she bought it for me and why I
like it so much.
The item is in itself unremarkable. It is a purple Craghoppers’ long-sleeved shirt. It is made of a quick-
drying poly cotton blend and the fabric has some stretchy qualities which make it easy to wear. The
fabric keeps out the sun, and the design incorporates a couple of pockets, one of which has a zip so
you can keep small items securely on your person. It is designed as a travel shirt, and to be honest, was
rather expensive compared to clothes I would normally buy but thanks to my friend I didn’t spend
anything. My friend knows my taste well enough, that’s why she thought I would love it much more than
anything I own.

She bought the shirt online ahead of travelling to South East Asia. It was just coming out of winter in the
UK, but I’d be going to a hot climate. I wanted something lightweight and comfortable to take with me.
She heard about it and as soon as she was aware of it, she immediately bought it as my birthday was
coming. It was the wrong time of year to be browsing shops in England, they were all still full of winter
clothes, so I just had to trust the description on the site that this would be a good buy, but I was nervous
in case it didn’t fit or wasn’t practical. I shouldn’t have worried. My best friend bought it and made me
happy fortunately.

I LOVE this shirt. It is incredibly comfortable to wear, the colour suits me quite well, and even
though it is designed as a travel shirt, it’s actually smart enough to wear for work if you match it with
some respectable trousers (or a skirt I suppose, but I never wear skirts!). It washes brilliantly, and if you
shake it out and put it on a hanger it dries crease-free within an hour or so. The hidden pocket is
handy for carrying emergency cash on your person, and I like to have a hanky with me too – there is a
pocket for that as well. Because the shirt is so comfy, and much harder wearing than I expected, I wore it
almost all the time on my travels. This means that the shirt is now linked to very many happy memories of
places I’ve been, people I’ve met and adventures I’ve had. I wish I’d bought loads of them at the same time.
I’ll be heart-broken when it eventually wears out as one day it surely must. Because it also reminds me of
my friend.

Talking about it has got me thinking – would it really hurt to have another quick look at their travel
clothes website once again? You never know, perhaps they’ll have a sale on and it would be a shame to
miss out...

Sample Answer 3:

Recently, on valentine day I have received a Red shirt from my beloved, it’s been a very good, I was
surprised and really enjoyed. actually, I don't really emphasize on wearing etiquettes, and have not
that smart knowledge about color combination that what would suit me more. But she is pretty sure
about her color sense and she suggested me again and again to wear red shirt with black carbon
jeans. And on that day, we went for shopping and she took out great hard work from a shop owner and
the other sales executive. She couldn't get halt until she got the color what she really wanted. I actually
enjoyed the whole thorough process, she was so engrossed to adorn me in her impression of mind, and
finally when I wore it, I couldn't believe myself that it was me. I really looked dashing and handsome,
and felt a stunning feeling. I really appreciated her sense of color, so she also started nursing her
pride with big laugh as if she had suggested me dumb in all sort of this. I had never seen such beautiful
smile and feelings on her face before. And she had bought that shirt with her money rather than made me
spent. So that's why it has really become important to me until she give me next gift with her money.

SAMPLE ANSWER 4

It just happened on last year of my birthday. My sister bought me a strapless dress as a present. I felt
surprised because this dress is not my taste. My sister said she bought it for me because she has never seen
I wore any this kind of dress. She told me, girls should have to care your appearance and strapless
dress is one of the most vital items in my wardrobe. The dress comes from a famous luxury brand
and I know lots of my friends dream for it. You know, the dress is black with understated decoration on
the hemline. Although I love this gorgeous dream, it could be worn only on formal occasions. So I wore
this dress in my graduation ceremony party. A lot of my classmates were fascinated by it and came to ask
me where they could buy it. You know, as I said I had never dressed like that before. But after that time, I
became more confident and changed my dressing style.
