Invitation to the

Singapore Biomedical Olympiad 2011


Organised by ACJC, in collaboration with

Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS


19 & 26 February 2011, for the Preliminary and Final Rounds respectively
at ACJC Campus

The Biomedical Club, a subsidiary of the ACJC Science and Mathematics Council, is proud to present the
Singapore Biomedical Challenge 2011 in collaboration with the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine,
National University of Singapore. This annual event aims to provide a platform for students to develop
their aptitude and potential in the biomedical disciplines, through critical thinking and problem solving.
Participants will have the opportunity to network with other like-minded students and the medical academia in
Singapore.

The Singapore Biomedical Challenge 2011 is divided into two categories:


the Olympiad for secondary schools; and
the Symposium for pre-university students.

This year, the theme is Cardiovascular and Gastrointestinal Systems. The scope includes structure,
function and disorders of:
Cardiovascular System – heart, blood vessels, blood components etc.
Gastrointestinal System – mouth, esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas etc.

Further details on the syllabus and rubrics will be provided upon confirmation of registration.

Highlights

Outstanding awardees will be offered opportunities by Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of
Singapore to participate in:

tours of the National University Health Systems (NUHS) laboratories;


introductory sessions by medical professors;
medical research programmes; and
medical attachments.

* ONLY top scorers in the Preliminary Round will be short listed to compete in the Final Round
on 26 February, Saturday from 1200 to 1400.
** ALL participants are invited to attend the Exhibition and Joint Prize Presentation
Ceremony for the Singapore Biomedical Olympiad and Singapore Biomedical Symposium, 2011.

Awards
1. The decisions by the panel of distinguished judges, consisting of clinicians, scientists, medical
academia and members of the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore, are
final and binding.
2. Based on the Preliminary Round, top scorers will be short listed to take part in the Final Round.
Results of the Preliminary Round will be emailed to all participants and teachers-in-charge by 1200 on
21 February 2011, Monday.
3. All participants are invited to attend the Exhibition and Joint Prize Presentation Ceremony on 26
February 2011, Saturday.

4. Each finalist will be judged based on their combined scores in the Preliminary Round and the Final
Round. The Gold Medal will be awarded to individuals who fall within the top 10% of the
participants, the Silver Medal to the subsequent 15%, the Bronze Medal to the subsequent 20%,
and the Honourable Mention to the next 5% of individuals. The Challenge Trophy will be
presented to the school with the highest medal tally, and that school will be invited to keep the trophy
for one year, after which it would be passed on to the subsequent champion of the Singapore
Biomedical Olympiad.
5. Each individual award consists of a medal, voucher and certificate.
6. Certificates of Participation and welcome gifts will be presented to all participants.
7. Only trophies, medals and prizes will be awarded on the day of the event. Certificates will be sent to
the individual schools at a later date.

Rubrics and Rules

Preliminary Round (Theoretical)


1. Each participant will be presented with multiple choice questions (MCQ) and structured questions.
2. All answers to questions should be indicated on a designated answer sheet within the stipulated
time limit
3. Participants are to bring their own stationery and writing materials
4. For the MCQs, a correct answer will be awarded 2 marks, no marks will be awarded for
unattempted questions and 1 mark will be deducted for incorrect answers.

Final Round (Theoretical and Experimental)

1. Each finalist will be presented with long structured questions and short structured question.
2. Microscopes and slides will be provided.
3. Marks will be awarded to correct answers. No marks will be deducted for incorrect answers or
unattempted questions.

Conditions
1. The organising committee will not accept any liability for entries lost in transit.
2. The organising committee reserves the right to revise the Rubrics and Rules of the Olympiad when it
deems necessary.
3. The use of all electronic devices such as mobile phones, pagers, PDAs, palm-tops etc, is strictly
prohibited during competitive entries throughout the Olympiad.

Exhibition
1. A wide range of preserved organ, tissue and cell specimens as well as authentic disease models will
be displayed.
2. Relevant learning tours and diagnostic demonstrations will be conducted and facilitated by medical
students and trained facilitators.

Entry Requirements and Registration

1. Each school may register up to a maximum of 30 participants. Schools may write in to request for
additional student(s) to participate, and the waiver of the stipulated maximum is subject to the
discretion of the organising committee.
2. Only Secondary 3-4 (IP Year 3-4) (Grade 9-10) students are eligible to participate in the
Olympiad. Students should not exceed the maximum age of 17 years as of 1 January 2011.
3. Approval by the Principal of the respective schools is necessary for valid participation.
4. Participants and accompanying teachers are kindly requested to monitor their health conditions and
temperatures before coming for the convention.
5. All participants must register through their schools and all Registration Forms are to be submitted by
their schools. As registration will be processed on a first-come-first-serve basis, schools are
encouraged to apply early in order to avoid disappointments. All Registration Forms must reach the
organizing committee by 26 January 2011, Wednesday via one of the following modes:

Payment

1. Registration fee per participant is $50.


2. Payment by schools must be made by 26 January 2011, Wednesday via one of the following modes:

Cheque : Payable to “Anglo-Chinese Junior College”. Kindly submit the


cheque with a copy of the Registration Form and attention the
documents to Mr Tan Kuan Loong.
IFAAS Payment : Kindly make a request for an e-invoice in the Registration Form if
your school wishes to receive an email of the e-invoice.
