Course Description
ENGC 2203 is a 2-credit hour course that focuses on effective argument. Students are
able to: account for and sustain their opinions in discussion by providing relevant
explanations, arguments and comments; understand the main ideas of complex texts on
both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in their field of
specialization, interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular
interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party; produce
clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue
giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
Prerequisite for ENGC2203: Assessment test (B2 score) or ENGC2202.
Course Objectives
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
1. understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract
topics;
2. interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity;
3. produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects;
4. explain a viewpoint on a topical issue;
5. understand broadcasted news and current affairs programs;
6. use appropriate strategies of reading, such as skimming, scanning;
7. read articles and reports focusing on contemporary problems in which
the writers adopt particular viewpoints;
8. take an active part in discussion in familiar contexts ;
9. present clear, detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects related to
their field of interest;
10. write letters highlighting the personal significance of events and
experiences;
11. write clear detailed text on a wide range of subjects related to their
interests;
12. write different types of essays on different topics and giving reasons in
support of a point of view;
13. give clear descriptions and express viewpoints on most topics;
14. show a high degree of grammatical accuracy;

15. speak with a clear, natural pronunciation and intonation;
16. express confidently, clearly and politely in formal or informal settings.

Attendance:

- Students who miss one-third of the classes, with or without an excuse, may be given
FA at the end of the semester.
