SET AND SETS OPERATIONS

Rationale Close family ties is one of the most valuable characteristic of a
Filipino citizen. We Filipinos are very much attached to everyone
we love the most. We engage ourselves in many groups---family
members, co-workers, circle of friend etc. In some groups that we
are to built are sometimes mathematical in a way that we can
distinguish the kind of set or group we will have.

CONTENT UNDERSTANDING
Content Standards The learner demonsrate the key concept of Sets.

Learning Competencies The learners will be able to described well-defined sets, subsets,
the null set, and the cardinality of sets.
Performance The learner will be able to understand the key concept of Sets.
Standards
 Describe and illustrate well-defined sets, subsets, null set
that can promote a good relationship with others.
 Determine wether the set is finite or infinite.
 Write a set in a roster and in set builder notation.
 List the subset of a set.

Focus  Critical thinking

 Problem Solving
 Logical thinking

Key Concept Sets, Subsets, Equal Sets, Null Sets

Resources Textbooks, Module, Powerpoint presentation, projector.

Essential Questions  What is the importance of sets?

 When can you tell that a set is finite or infinite?
 How can you determine that a set is in a roster form or it is
inn a set-biulder form?

STRATEGIES FOR INQUIRY

Inquiry Stimulus Segregating garbages is one of the projects of the Clean and Green
in every barangay of a municipality, the citizens of each barangay
must know how do they segregate their garbages according to its
kind. They discover that they need to learn to classify their
garbages in a set or with their similarities and differences.

Inquiry Questions  How do they segregate their garbages?

 On what set does the plastic bottles belong?
 On what set does the left over food belong?
 How do you integrate sets in segregating garbages?
 What could be the possible effect if we do not segragate our
garbages?

DAY 1: SETS AND SET NOTATION

I. Routine Activities
A. Opening Prayer
B. Cleanliness and orderliness
C. Checking of attendance
II. Preparatory Activities
A. Prepare the classroom into a circular arragement of
chairs.
B. Present the game “GET-SET, form a SET”
- The objective of the game is to form sets of
individuals based on the description that a
teacher will give. Everytime an individudual is
inclined in the “right set” he/she earns a point.

GET-SET, form a SET:

1. A set of 5 students born on June.
2. A set of 4 students wearing eye glasses.
3. A set of 3 students who got a perfect score
in the assignment.
4. A set of students with white handkerchief.
5. A set of 4 students with “de”, “del” or
“dela” in their surname.

III. Discussion
A. Definition of important terms.
SUBSETS
EQUAL SETS
PROPER SUBSETS
NULL SETS

B. Drill
The students will be having their activity by pair.
Each pair is given certain questions and they have to
answer those questions within 15mins. The first pair
who can finished the task will be rewarded.
I. Given:
X ={ a , b , c , d , e , f , … ,k } L= { g ,h , i , j } Z={k ,l , m, n , o , p , … , z }
. Tell whether the statement is true or false.
1. c ∈ X
2. X ∁ Y
3. ∅ ∁Y
4. w ∈ Z
5. q ∈ Z
6. X =Z

II. Write all the subsets of each set and Identify all
the proper subsets.
1. A={ a , b , c , d }
2. F={4 , 6 , 8 , 9,10 }

C. Investigation
 With your partner, list all the common traits
you have and your differences. There will be
5 pairs who will be chosen to share their
answers.

IV. Closing Activities

A. Closing prayer
METACOGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT AND ASSEESSMENT
Assessment tools  Written work (WW)
 Performance task(PeTa)
 Quarterly Assessment(QA)

Metacognitive When the introduction is done, ask these reflection questions:

Extension  Where can sets be seen in our daily routines?
 In what way can we integrate sets in defferent subjects in
school?
 How can we apply the concept of sets in our daily activities?

Cross-Disciplinary Environmental Science/Natural Science/Social Science

Applications Sets can be seen and used in different areas such as in classifying
garbage for the clean and green project. We can also used sets in
our daily lifes through the essence of belongingness and
cooperation in a group we have and every task we do.
