1. According to Stanley Krippner, shamans are “community-assigned magico-

religious professionals who deliberately alter their consciousness in order to obtain
information from the ‘spirit world.’ They use this knowledge and power to help and
to heal members of their community, as well as the community as a whole.” He
describes shamans as the first physicians, diagnosticians, magicians, etc. However,
the shaman is unique in that he or she not only has increased facility for traveling in
non-ordinary realms, but also uses their spirit relationships to create changes that
will manifest in the physical world, for the healing of individuals or the community.

of behavior. While profession is a job, or what you do for a living, it
is basically a paid occupation, especially one that involves prolonged
training and a formal qualification.

have diligence and skill prescribed in the code of practice of your
profession, you should still support and encourage self care
because it is important as it reflects everything about us, even how
others perceive us. When we care for ourselves we have higher
levels of self-esteem and present ourselves with confidence
especially in the field of health care industry.

families. They show empathy and being able to understand the patient’s situation,
perspective and feelings.

2. Fostering therapeutic patient-nurse relationship starts with introducing yourself to

the patient and use patients name while talking with them. Making sure that the
patient has privacy when you provide care. Actively listen to the patient. Maintain
eye contact and maintain professional boundaries.

3. The influence of culture on health is vast. It affects perceptions of health, illness

and death, beliefs about causes of disease, approaches to health promotion, how
illness and pain are experienced and expressed, where patients seek help, and the
types of treatment patients prefer. Demonstrating awareness of a patient’s culture
can promote trust, better health care, lead to higher rates of acceptance of
diagnoses and improve treatment adherence.

4. Elizabeth Fry worked to improve nursing standards and established a nursing

school which influenced her distant relative, Florence Nightingale. The foundations
of nursing practiced across the world were pioneered by the greatest figure in
nursing history, Florence Nightingale. She helped to define nursing practice by
suggesting that nurses did not need to know all about the disease process like the
medical field. They needed to know how to care for a patient through the
environment, helping the patient deal with symptoms and changes in function
related to illness.

5. Yes, Florence Nightingale’s influence has been of benefit to the modern nursing
because not only did she improved the standards of the nursing profession but she
also enhanced the hospitals in which they worked. Nightingale also raised the
standard of nursing by incorporating education and responsibilities, paving the path
for a respected and appreciated profession.
1. I think over the next 30 years there will be extensive training programs, more
diversified staff, and a level of prestige associated with this area of the medical field
that wasn’t there before. The advancements in technology will soon create an
environment that makes patient care more efficient and helpful for the patient.
Technological advancements will change almost every industry, this will help save
more lives, make certain jobs easier for nurses, and create a better experience for
patients. The nursing profession has come leaps and bounds and continues to be a
growing field. The changes in training, health care setting, growing responsibilities,
nursing culture, and patient care have saved countless lives and helped it become
the respected field that it is today.
