CHEM 241

Assignment 1

Answer the following questions:

Question 1
Calculate the pressure exerted by 0.30 mol of helium in a 0.20 L container at -25°C using
a. ideal gas equation
b. van der Waals equation
What is the difference in pressure between the non-ideal and ideal gases?
Given: aHe = 0.0341 atm.L2/mol2, bHe = 0.0237 L/mol , R = 0.0821 L.atm/mol.K

Question 2
A sample of hydrogen gas is collected over water. The total pressure of the wet hydrogen in a 500 mL
container is 756.5 mmHg at 21°C. If the hydrogen is dried and placed in a 200 mL container at 18°C,
what will its pressure be? (Vapor pressure of water at 21oC is 18.7 mm Hg)

Question 3
Calculate Ho (in kilojoules) for the following reaction, which describes the preparation of an
unstable acid, HNO2, nitrous acid: HCl(g) + NaNO2(s)  HNO2(l) + NaCl(s) Ho = ?
Using the following thermochemical equations:
2 NaCl(s) + H2O(l)  2 HCl(g) + Na2O(s) Ho(1) = + 507.3 kJ
NO(g) + NO2(g) + Na2O(s)  2 NaNO2(s) Ho(2) = - 427.14 kJ
NO(g) + NO2(g)  N2O(g) + O2(g) Ho(3) = - 42.68 kJ
2 HNO2(l)  N2O(g) + O2(g) + H2O(l) Ho(4) = + 34.35 kJ

Question 4
1.00 mole sample of argon gas having a molar heat capacity of 20.79 J/oC.mole, which fills a balloon
at STP. Suppose the balloon is heated to a temperature of 50 o, calculate the change in internal
energy, E of the gas. (R = 0.0821 L·atm/mol·K)

Question 5
For each of the following reactions, indicate whether you would expect the entropy of the system to
increase or decrease, and explain why.
(a) CH3OH (l) → CH3OH (g)
(b) N2O4 (g) → 2NO2 (g)
(c) 2KClO3 (s) → 2KCl (s) + 3O2 (g)
(d) 2NH3 (g) + H2SO4 (aq) → (NH4)2SO4 (aq)

Question 6
Hydrochloric acid (HCl) reacts with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to form sodium chloride (NaCl) and
water. If ΔH° = – 56.13 kJ/mol and ΔS° = 79.11 J/mol.K, what is ΔG° for this reaction at 20°C?
