1. Operating system
2. Utility software
3. Language Software

Operating System
• This is the software that creates an interface between the user and
the computer
• It is made up of three parts
1. User interface
• This allows the user to interact with the computer by either typing commands
or by clicking.
2. File and folder Management
• This section is responsible creating files, attaching file names to files and
remembering where files have been saved
3. Kernel
• This part of an Operating system is responsible controlling and managing
Hardware devices

Utility Software
• These are programs that aim at protecting and maintain the
computer system.
• Examples of utility software are
• Disk Defragmentation software
• Antivirus software etc

Language Software
• These are programs that translate instruction written in
human understandable language to the language
understood by machines (machine Language).
• There are three types of language software
1. Assembler
• This software translates instructions written in Assembly Language
to machine language
2. Interpreter
• Translates instructions written in any high-level language to machine
code line by line
3. Compiler
• Translates instructions written in any high-level language to machine
code line by line
