Introduction
Hello parents of Mrs. Connolly’s 1st grade students! Our names are Teresa Sandberg and
Taylor Stier, and we are education majors from The College of New Jersey. We have been
assigned Mrs. Connolly’s class for student teaching this semester, and we are very excited to
be working with your children! We have spent four days so far observing the class via Zoom,
and now we will get to spend two full weeks working with Mrs. Connolly and her students.
One of our assignments for our class is to create a unit plan and teach it to the students, so we
just wanted to reach out to you and briefly explain what our unit will entail. We hope your
children learn a lot from these lessons, but also have fun, too!

Theme of the Week: Turkeys

This week students will be learning all about turkeys. The students will be learning about the
body parts of a turkey, the diet of a turkey, the habitat of a turkey, and the difference between
male and female turkeys. The students will be doing a lot of fun turkey themed activities, and
we will be reading multiple books related to turkeys. On the first day, we will read Wild
Turkeys by Rebecca Sabelko and learn about body parts of the turkey. On the second day, we
will read Backyard Wildlife: Wild Turkeys by Kristin Schuetz, and the students will learn about
the difference between male and female turkeys. On the third day, we will read Turkeys by Leo
Statts and learn about the diet and habitat of a turkey. We will learn about what turkeys eat as
well as the difference between domesticated and wild turkeys. On the fourth day, we will read
10 Fat Turkeys by Tony Johnston. The students will play a fun math game on abcya.com called
Turkey Touchdown to go along with this lesson. On the last day, we will read Turkey Trouble
by Wendi Silavno, and the students will disguise a turkey however they choose, which will be a
fun and engaging activity for the students. As a culminating activity, we will have the students
dress up as a turkey. They can be as creative as they want with it and use anything they have
around the house for their outfit. Also, we have provided multiple fun turkey themed activities
on a virtual bulletin board that you can do at home with your children, as well as a list of book
suggestions related to turkeys and a link to a collection of turkey books on epic.com. Here is a
