Assessment Task 1

Assessment name: Critical Reflection and Discussion

You need to critically reflect on unit learning, your values and beliefs
Task description:
surrounding mental health and illness to discuss and justify person
centred care and culturally safe care in the delivery of mental health
interventions and therapeutic interactions.
What you need to do: • Read the Criterion Reference Assessment rubric for this task.
This will help you understand what is required of you and how
this assessment will be graded.
• Make reference to and integrate the required unit readings and
contemporary peer reviewed literature, to demonstrate you have
achieved deeper meaning from your reactions and insights.
• Watch the YouTube Videos: “Surviving Schizophrenia”
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8RhNMRyKG0 (2016)
(2016) and “Imagine there was no stigma to Mental Illness (2016)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrbTbB9tTtA

Answer the following questions:

1. Stigma and discrimination towards people with psychotic

disorders can inhibit them from seeking treatment (Fox, Smith &
Vogt, 2018). Critically discuss one barrier to and one enabler of
treatment seeking, drawing on contemporary, peer reviewed
evidence. (approx. 500 words).
2. Critically reflect on one example of how mental illness can be
stigmatised, drawing from the media or from your own experience
or knowledge (this element of the assignment is not about your
own experience of mental illness) and its impact on how you
would provide culturally safe care. (approx. 400 words).
Note: refer to cite write for referencing these sources with self,
websites & media
3. Briefly explain and justify one way in which you, as a nursing
student, can advocate towards greater inclusion and support of
people with a lived experience of mental illness. (approx. 200
words).
Note: reference literate here that is about student advocacy
rather than RN.

Reference: You will need to refer to the literature (Contemporary, peer

reviewed journal articles) to support your key discussion points, this
demonstrates you have thought deeply and critically about the
assessment and are able to link your learning from the unit to clinical
practice.
