Tool Box Talk

Delivery Guide
To help make Tool Box Talks (TBT’s) more interesting and more varied we have uploaded to our HSE website 50
Tool-Box-Talks (TBT) which describe the learnings from Lost Time Injuries and Asset Integrity Process Safety (AIPS)
Tier 1 incidents from 2014. The advice below explains how to use the TBTs using the new reflective learning
philosophy.

Advice

1. Go to (http://pdointernet/hseforcontractors/tbt/tbt.aspx).
2. Select the topic you are interested in from the below list and click on it to expand the selection:

For example, if you click on “Motor Vehicle Incident” the following selections will appear:

3. Click on the selection you want to discuss about, a pdf file will open so please print it out. Default print is on
A3 double side; please don’t change the default printing settings.
4. Familiarise yourself with the TBT beforehand. You need to know which questions to ask the participants and
answer their questions.
5. Take the TBT and hold it up showing the picture to the team.
6. Let them look at the picture and then ask “How do you think this injury or incident happened?”
7. There are three languages so where possible deliver it in the participant’s native tongue.
8. Answer their questions and work out together how the person was injured.
9. Tell them how it happened if they did not get it but then ask “Could we in our work suffer the same injury
and how?”
10. Ask them “How we can all together prevent a similar injury from happening to us?”
11. Help them think of similar issues that they might face in their work.
