ANNUAL REPORT OF THE WORK DONE IN VARIOUS UNITS OF

R.A.K. COLLEGE OF NURSING


DURING THE YEAR ACADEMIC 2018-2019

I. INTRODUCTION:

The Rajkumari Amrit Kaur College of Nursing was established 72 years ago. The
primary objective is to provide and promote education & research in the field of nursing. It is
a pioneer institute for nursing education in India and South East Asian region offering basic
and higher education programmes. It is controlled financially by Ministry of Health & Family
Welfare and affiliated to University of Delhi as department of nursing under Faculty of
Science.

II. ADMISSIONS AND GRADUATION:

The admissions to B.Sc. (Hons.) Nursing and M.Sc. Nursing and M.Phil in Nursing
are made on the basis of merit in the selection test as laid down by the Academic Council of
the University of Delhi.

III. SCHOLARSHIP AND FINANCIAL AID:

 17 B.Sc. (Hons) Nursing students were awarded Merit Scholarship by the Department
of Welfare for SC/ST/OBC & Minority, Government of N.C.T of Delhi.
 Ms. Chandni Thakur, M.Sc. Nursing student was awarded President Gold Medal for
standing 1st in M.Sc. Nursing Examination.

IV. BUDGET:

The Budget Provision for the financial year 2018-2019 was Rs. 13,46,00,000/-
(Rupees Thirteen Crore Forty Six Lakh only) under Major Head 2210 and Rs. 30,39,00,000 /-
(Rupees Thirty Crore Thirty Nine Lakh only ) under Major Head 4210 (Capital).

V. TEACHING AND RESEARCH:

The college has implemented the revised curriculum for M.Sc. Nursing programme as
per INC guidelines under Delhi University where along with theoretical knowledge more
emphasis is on clinical experience and skill development. During the academic year 2018-
2019, B.Sc. (Hons.) Nursing and M.Sc. Nursing programme were conducted as per the
schedule for a total of 303 students. All the teaching departments planned and effectively
implemented the courses for B.Sc. (Hons.) Nursing, M.Sc. Nursing and short-term/
continuing education courses except M.Phil in Nursing & Ph.D. in Nursing for which
admissions were not made owing to shortage as well as non-filling up of the senior
faculty positions.

(a) Community Health Nursing :

Community health nursing programme was planned and implemented as per B.Sc.
(Hons) Nursing / M.Sc. Nursing curriculum. The field experience was given for students in
urban and rural community setting. MCH Center & Maternity Home, Sriniwas Puri (MCD)
was taken for providing urban community health field experience. RFTC Chhawla was
utilized for rural field experiences for B.Sc. (Hons) nursing students. Educational visits were
arranged for B. Sc (Hons) 2nd year and 3rd year students to gain knowledge about health
agencies like Indian Red Cross, Shanti Avedna Sadan, National Centre for Diseases Control
(NCDC), Water Works, Sewage Disposal Plant, Mother Dairy, TNAI, Pt. Deendayal Institute
of Physically Handicapped etc. In B.Sc. (Hons) nursing programme the major emphasis was
to develop primary health care competencies in the family and community setting by utilizing
local resources and achieve community participation. Students actively participated in the
national health programs.

M.Sc. Nursing elective students of Community Health Nursing has taken C Block
Private Colony Sriniwas Puri for community identification. The major objective of their
experience was to assist students to gain competencies in rendering comprehensive care to
high risk communities and families on priority basis using problem solving approach. They
also planned need based community health action programme on Family welfare and
prevention & control of vector borne diseases for the C Block Private Colony community at
Sriniwas puri utilizing community resources and mobilizing team effort. M.Sc. Nursing
Students also completed their summer field experience at CHC, Phulera Jaipur Rajasthan,
AIIMS Ballabhgarh, Adarsh PHC, Machari Rajasthan, PHC, Lubhuoo Nepal. All the

International & National Health Days were celebrated by organizing health awareness
campaign.
School health experience was provided in the schools of south-east district of Delhi
govt. school health scheme. M.Sc. Nursing final Year students had their international clinical
health experience at IDSP in NCDC & Airport Health Organization.
During their rural health experience at RFTC Chhawla, the M.Sc. Nursing students
did health survey and assessment of problem of Non Communicable Disease and conducted a
health camp for the community at RFTC Chhawla. M.Sc Nursing 1 st year students conducted
awareness project on Sexual Abuse for Girls students in Government Senior Secondary
School at Defence Colony, New Delhi.

(b) Medical-Surgical Nursing:

During the year 2018-2019, teaching, supervision & evaluation of Medical Surgical
Nursing was undertaken for M.Sc. Nursing & B.Sc. (Hons) Nursing students. The 21 post
graduate students under medical surgical elective were offered the area of specialization in
critical care unit for their clinical experience. They were posted in different specialty area like
various intensive care units, Cardio thoracic, Neurology, Nephrology, Orthopaedics,
Emergency, OT and Oncology at Safdarjung Hospital, Durga Devi Birla Memorial Hospital,
Chirawa, Rajasthan and Barala Hospital and Research Centre, Chomu, Rajasthan for their
summer field clinical experience. M.Sc. Nursing (1st year) students were posted in B.L.
Kapoor Hospital, New Delhi, Maulana Hospital, Malappuram, Kerala, Regional Institute of
Medical Science, Imphal, Manipur, Kainos Hospital, Rohtak to fulfill their objectives. The
programme was planned and implemented as per curriculum.
The B.Sc. (Hons) Nursing students of III & IV semester were provided supervised
clinical experience in Medical surgical area and also in different specialty areas i.e.
Neurology, Cardiology, Skin & VD, Nephrology, Cancer, Ortho, Paediatrics, T.B, Eye, ENT,
O.T, Causality & emergency, Gynae, Burns and Plastics along with medical and surgical area
of different hospital mainly in Safdarjung hospital and the Lala Ram Swarup Institute of
Tuberculosis & Allied Diseases New Delhi. B.Sc. (H) Nursing 1st year students were also
provided supervised clinical experience in medical surgical area of Safdarjung Hospital.
Educational visits were arranged for B.Sc. (H) Nursing 2nd Year to Max Hospital Saket &
NCDC. Observational visit was also planned for B.Sc. (H) Nursing 1 st year students at
various department of S.J. Hospital and PHC Najafgarh.

(c) Child Health Nursing

During the year 2018-2019 clinical experience and education of child health nursing
was undertaken for B.Sc. (H) Nursing students as per stated objectives. B.Sc. (H) Nursing
students of V semester, and VIII semester were provided clinical experience for child health
nursing at Safdarjung Hospital in various departments such as paediatric medical, post-
operative, neonatal intensive care unit, immunization clinic and Frank Anthony Public
School. The Programme was planned and implemented as per objectives. B.Sc. (H) Nursing
Interns organized health awareness programmes and mass health education programme in
paediatric department at Safdarjung Hospital. Students also participated in poster making
competition and health education activitiy organized to celebrate Breast Feeding Week at
Safdarjaung Hospital. The programme was planned and implemented as per curriculum.

(d) Psychiatric Nursing:

The department is associated to the Psychiatric Department of RML Hospital, GB


Pant Hospital, and safdarjung Hospital. In these hospitals, students get the clinical experience

as a part of their training. During the session 2018-2019 B.Sc. (H) Nursing, 3 rd Year, Intern
and M.Sc. Nursing, 1st year could successfully undergo their training in these hospitals.
Besides this nursing students conducted group Projects (Both B.Sc. (H) Nursing
Interns and M.Sc. Nursing Separately) in the General OPD of RML & Safdarjung Hospital on
various issues of mental illness. This was to create awareness amongst the general public,
avail medical help and reduce the stigma. The programmes were appreciated well.
B.Sc. (H) Nursing interns organized a Diwali programme for the patients at both
RML Hospital and Safdarjung Hospital for the recreation of the patients and their concerned
relatives.
The Department organized the Mental Health Week programme on 5/10/2018 at the
RAK College of Nursing. Students also participated in the Mental Health Week Programme
organized in RML Hospital and Safdarjung Hospital. The practical examination for both the
B.Sc. (H) Nursing, and M.Sc. Nursing was conducted at GB Pant Hospital & Safdarjung
Hospital.
Therefore, the student could get various experiences in the field of Psychiatric Mental
Health Nursing for the session 2018-2019.

(e) Obstetrics and Obstetrical Nursing:

Obstetrical nursing experience was provided to both B.Sc. (H) Nursing and M.Sc.
Nursing students as per the curriculum. Total six students opted for obstetrical nursing in
M.Sc. Nursing programme. Students were posted in various specialty units like antenatal
clinic, postnatal unit, labour room, NICU, OT, H.D.U. at safdarjung hospital. A group project
was conducted by M.Sc. Nursing students on ‘Quality Maternity Care- positive child birth
experience at safdarjung hospital for the nursing personnel. It was appreciated by one and all.
M.Sc. 1st year student had the summer field experience at AIIMS Rishikesh, Ganga Ram
Hospital Rajinder Nagar, Delhi. B.Sc. (H) Nursing V semester and VIII semester students
were provided supervised clinical experience at safdarjung Hospital, in all speciality areas of
obstetrics. All the students were able to complete their clinical requirements. B.Sc. (H)
Nursing V semester students also participated in the “Partner’s Forum” on 14 th Dec, 2018 at
Vigyan Bhawan organized by MoHFW, Government of India.

(f) Nutrition:

Knowledge on Nutrition is an essential component of entire health care system. B.Sc.


(Hons.) students were acquainted with normal, therapeutic and Public health Nutrition.
Besides this every student was provided with individual practical experience in the Nutrition
Lab pertaining to simple preparation of beverages, complementary foods for infants,
nutritious snacks for vulnerable groups etc.

VI. CONTINUING EDUCATION:

During the period under review, continuing education courses were conducted for
nursing personnel. Two national level short-term courses on “Emerging Role of Nurse in
India” & “Healing Touch for Quality Patient Care” from 25th Feb 2019 to 1st March 2019 &
11th March 2019 to 15th March 2019 were held. There were 56 (27+29) participants who
participated in these workshops. The programmes ended successfully.
Professional study programmes, educational tours and individual study programmes
were planned and coordinated for visiting nurses, health professionals and students from
other states (Annexure-III).

VII. RURAL FIELD TEACHING CENTRE, CHHAWLA

The Rural Teaching Centre was established in 1950 for the purpose of providing
objective oriented rural community health experience to the students. It covers population of
approx. 22,000 and is situated 35 km away from the college. The center provides an
integrated comprehensive health and family welfare service to the community. Special
emphasis is given on MCH services, family planning, immunization, family welfare services,
nutrition, adolescent girl’s health and health education programme by the students and faculty
of rural unit in collaboration with the staff of RHTC, Najafgarh. Staff and students also
participated in National Health Programmes like Vector Borne Disease Control programme,
Revised National Tuberculosis control programme, AIDS control programme, Diarrhea
Disease control and Intensified Pulse Polio programme etc. The Centre also has DOTS and
Microscopic Centre for screening and treatment of T.B. & MDRTB patients. RFTC Chhawla
is also a ‘Team Movement Point” for pulse polio programmes.
B.Sc. (Hons) Nursing 1st year students learnt to make health assessment of individual
and effect of health determinants in community setting. They made observation of
community health and health allied resources. 2nd year students learnt to give health education
in different community setting and gained insight of epidemiological triad. They also learnt to
identify the health problems in community by family interaction and observation of
environmental factors.
B.Sc. (Hons) Nursing 3rd Year and 4th Year students developed competency in
providing comprehensive health care to the individual, family and community. They also
learnt to conduct community survey to identify specific health needs and problems. They
plan, organize and evaluate nursing programme based on the need identified. The students
were helped in gaining insight of the health services rendered to the rural community by
providing need based family health care and organizing health education programme in
different community setting. M.Sc. Nursing Students of 1 st & 2nd Year also develop
competences rendering community health nursing services by using intersectoral approach.
They also learn to demonstrate leadership & management abilities in community health
nursing. Details of activity given in Annexure-IV

VIII. LIBRARY

The total expenditure on journals during the period was Rs. 15,17,062/- (Rupees
Fifteen Lacs Seventeen Thousand Sixty Two) only. Xerox facilities and lending facilities
were provided to the students and staff.

IX. STUDENT WELFARE AND CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES:

a) Student Health Programmes


The main objectives of the student health programme is to help students to promote
and maintain their own health, and to prevent and control the diseases by early detection and
treatment.

Detailed medical examination was done for all new admissions. Other activities of the
Health Office are periodical check-up, treatment of minor ailments, follow-up, immunization,
individual counseling and guidance. Details of activities are given in (Annexure VI).
b) SNA Activities:
Students started the year with lot of enthusiasm & initiated activities at SNA unit level
& National level. Brief accounts of activities are as follows:
 Session 2018-2019 began with the celebration of Fresher’s party which was an
expression of welcome to the new batch of B.Sc. (H) Nursing 1 st year & M.Sc.
Nursing 1st year.
 The students took active participation in celebrating the festive occasions in the
college. The celebration included Independence Day celebration, Teacher’s Day
celebration, onam celebration, Diwali celebration, Christmas celebration & New
Year.
 The students also participated in various state level competitions organized by SNA
and other organisations.
 Students got 2nd Prize in Quiz competition and 3 rd prize in poster making competition
organized by NOTTO in SRCC College.
 Students got 1st Prize in pebble painting in fest organized by AIIMS College of
Nursing.
 Ms. Ashana Chanderwal bagged the 2nd position in Power Lifting and Weight Lifting
organized by Delhi University Sports Council.

c) Sports Activities

Regular sports classes were held for B.Sc. (Hons.) Nursing and M.Sc. Nursing
students twice a week. The classes were conducted by an external sports faculty Mr. Kamal
Nain Singh. Various inter class competitions were held like Chess, Carrom, Cricket, Kho-
Kho, Relay Race, Discuss Throw, Javelin Throw, Badminton, throw ball etc. Prizes of
different sports events were distributed on Annual Sports Day celebration.
The 54th Annual Sports Day was held on 22 nd February 2019. Mr. Abhishek Dutt,
Counsellor South District and Mr. A. K. Gupta Deputy Secretary MoHFW were the chief
guest for the morning/ evening session respectively. All faculty members actively
participated to make the event a success. The College has registered for Delhi University
Sports Committee. The student also participated in various sports events organized by Delhi
University.

X. OTHER ACTIVITIES:

Despite the limitations of accommodation, faculty positions, other restraints and


constraints, the College has made great strides in the field of nursing and health care. College
faculty is enthusiastic and hard working. Some Teachers of the college are engaged in many
areas of research in different fields of nursing and nursing education. Some of them are
providing consultative and advisory services and are participating in projects and meetings at
National level.
In accordance with the Delhi University regulation “Policy on Sexual Harassment
Ordinance XV(D): Prohibition of and Punishment for Sexual Harassment of University of
Delhi”, A College Complaint Committee of 9 members including two outside members has
been formulated for dealing with cases of Sexual Harassment.
Vigilance awareness week observed at Chhawla sub-center and RAK College of
Nursing.
Staff orientation programme for faculty and staff was conducted by MoHFW
organized by Deputy Secretary (Nursing).

Workshop on BCLS & CCLS was organized for M.Sc. (final) year on 28 th and 29th
March, 2019 by Indian Resuscitation Council, AIIMS.
The College (faculty and students) is participating regularly in Pulse Polio
Immunization Programme since 1995. RFTC, Chhawla has been made TMP (Team
Movement Point) for Pulse Polio since 2002. Assembly and zonal coordinators have highly
appreciated the quality of work done by the College students and teachers in ‘House to
House’ activity of Pulse Polio Programme. The faculty and college are regularly participating
in “Perfect Health Mela”.
Various activities were conducted by M.Sc. Nursing Students e.g.- Summer field
posting and problem solving project (Annexure IX).
Several faculty members have participated and organized short term course and
workshops. Some of them have published and presented papers. Many of the staff members
are the executive members of Professional organizations (Annexure III & VII).
College has got grant to prepare module for nurses on National emergency life
support of Nurses (NELSON) from Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. The module has
been submitted to the ministry.

XI. ACHIEVEMENT:

 Dr. (Mrs.) Harindarjeet Goyal is Ph.D. guide for 6 students under the Ph.D.
programme offered by Ph.D. Consortium initiated by Indian Nursing Council and
R.G.U.H.S. (Annexure VIII)

XII. PROBLEMS FACED:

 Principal’s post is lying vacant since 2007, vice principal post filled up on adhoc,
Professor post is lying vacant since 1994, Associate Professor only 2 post has
been filled.
 27% Reserved seats in B.Sc. (H) Nursing & M.Sc. Nursing courses for OBC
students were taken without any faculty & infrastructure which is creating lots of
problem.
 Hierarchial disparity of faculty position (7) between RAK College of nursing
compared to other colleges which are upgraded from schools of nursing to
colleges of nursing under Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.
 Pay was raised by 3% of the total pay (MACP) at the level of tutor post instead of
next level of pay scale (i.e. Level 11, GP-6600/-).
 The Library needs upgradation in terms of Automation.
 Non-enhancement of B.Sc. (Hons) Internship allowance from existing Rs.500/-
p.m.
 Non-enhancement of Central Govt. Scholarship from existing Rs.150/- p.m. for
B.Sc. (Hons) and Rs.250/- p.m. for M.Sc. Nursing students.

XIII. FUTURE PLANS:

 Strengthening of RAK College of Nursing: As Centre of Excellence, Rs. 96.83


crores is planned for the expansion work by provision of additional construction, lab
equipment, library and strengthening of faculty etc.
 The Architectural plans are ready and clearance is sought from all civic agencies
except land and development office. It is under process likely to be sought soon with
the help of higher authorities at ministry of health and family welfare.

Report on performance of staff and students at R.F.T.C., Chhawla
(April 2018 to March 2019)

 03 In service education programme was conducted for ASHAs, Anganwadi workers


and Primary School Teachers.
 01 Camp is organized on Non Communicable Diseases – An Awareness cum
screening approach for Chhawla and nearby villages.
 188 health education sessions were planned and organized in different community and
schools on different topics.
 13 Group Projects on different topics as per the need of community was conducted in
community and schools.
 06 demonstrations were given on ORS preparation, breast feeding, balanced diet,
Breast Self-Examination and hand washing.
 Various health and other related activities were conducted on World Health day,
World Hypertension day, International Yoga Day, World Rabies week and Central
vigilance awareness week.

OTHER ACTIVITIES:
 RFTC, Chhawla is a team movement point for Pulse polio Programme House to
House Activity.
 03 Pulse polio sessions were held during the year and approximately 3000 children
were vaccinated with Oral Polio vaccine during each session.
 02 nukkad natak sessions on prevention, control and management of TB and
Substance Abuse were conducted in collaboration with various agencies.
 Exposure of Community Field experience to other institutions includes NEIGRIMS,
Shillong, Meghalaya, Nightingale College of Nursing, Holy Family College of
Nursing and National Heart Institute New Delhi.
