6 Chemical Engineering Fluid Dynamics

session 2016 Due Date: 3rd May-2018
Solve all the questions. (Related to Pumps, Fan, Blower and Compressor)
Q1
The impeller of a centrifugal pump has a diameter of 10 cm and breadth 3.5 cm at the inner
periphery; the corresponding dimensions at the outer periphery are 20 cm and 1.7 cm
respectively. The pump runs at 1500 rpm, has 7 vanes with vane angle at entry and exit equal to
16 and 30 degrees respectively. Calculate the theoretical head developed, the actual head
produced.
Q2
A centrifugal pump with critical cavitation number 0.12 is said to be installed at a location where
the barometric pressure and the vapor pressure are stated to be 95 kPa (abs) and 3 kPa (abs)
respectively. If the pump duty is to deliver 0.15 m3/s of water against 25 m head, determine the
minimum NPSH required. Also calculate the maximum allowable elevation, above the sump
water surface, at which the pump can be set up. Take intake pipe friction equivalent to 0.25 m.
Q3
Single stage centrifugal pump runs at 500 rpm and delivers 300 m3/min of water against a head
of 120 m. the pump impeller is 2 m in diameter and it has a positive suction lift (including the
velocity head and friction) of 3 m. Laboratory tests are to be conducted on a model with 45 cm
impeller and on a reduced head of 95 m. calculate the speed, the discharge and suction lift for
atmospheric tests. Assume vapor head is 0.34 m of water and atmospheric head is 10.15 m of
water.
Q4
The flow system used to test a centrifugal pump at a nominal speed of 1750 rpm is shown. The
liquid is water at 80 F. and the suction and discharge pipe diameters are 6 in. Data measured
during the test are given in the table. The motor is supplied at 460 V, 3 -phase and has a power
factor of 0.875 and a constant efficiency of 90 percent. Calculate the net head delivered and the
pump efficiency at a volume flow rate of 1000 gpm. Plot the pump head, power input, efficiency
as functions of volume flow rate.

Q5
A centrifugal blower rotates at 1750 rpm (183.3 rad/s). Air enters the impeller normal to the
blades (0°) and exits at an angle of 40° from radial (40°). The inlet radius is r1 = 4.0 cm, and the
inlet blade width b1 = 5.2 cm. The outlet radius is r2 = 8.0 cm, and the outlet blade width b2 = 2.3
cm. The volume flow rate is 0.13 m3/s. For the idealized case, i.e., 100 percent efficiency,
calculate the net head produced by this blower in equivalent millimeters of water column height.
Also calculate the required brake horsepower in watts.
Q6
Air leaving the impeller with radial velocity 110 m/s makes an angle of 25o with the axial
direction. The impeller tip speed is 475 m/s. The compressor efficiency is 0.80 and the
mechanical efficiency is 0.96. Find the slip factor, overall pressure ratio, and power required to
drive the compressor. Neglect power input factor and assume gamma = 1.4, T01 = 298 K, and the
mass flow rate is 3 kg/s.
Q7
In a centrifugal compressor air enters at a stagnation temperature of 288 K and stagnation
pressure of 1.01 bar. The impeller has 17 radial vanes and no inlet guide vanes. The following
data apply:
Mass flow rate: 2.5 kg/s
Impeller tip speed: 475 m/s
Mechanical efficiency: 96%
Absolute air velocity at diffuser exit: 90 m/s
Compressor isentropic efficiency: 84%
Absolute velocity at impeller inlet: 150 m/s
Diffuser efficiency: 82%
Axial depth of impeller: 6.5 mm
Power input factor: 1.04
gamma for air: 1.4
Determine:
i. shaft power
ii. stagnation and static pressure at diffuser outlet
iii. radial velocity, absolute Mach number and stagnation and static pressures at the impeller
exit, assume reaction ratio as 0.5, and
impeller efficiency and rotational speed
