CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter explains how a research the research will be done – particularly the way the
participants are chosen, the ways of data collection, and the data analysis. Its parts are (a) research
method used, (b) research design used, (c) data collection method, (d) data analysis, (e) population
and sampling technique, and (f) ethical considerations in conducting the study.

Research Method Used

The research method used in the study is either quantitative or qualitative research. Answer
the following questions and explain them in paragraph form:
1. What is qualitative research? For this, you have to use a definition and description coming
from a pertinent source and cite him using APA citation. You may use the what is written in the
book, or look for another source. Just make sure to paraphrase the article.
2. What is with your current research study that makes it a qualitative research? Explain it and
match your description with your answers from number 1.

Research Design Used

Wait for our discussion about the types of qualitative research. For now, read in advance
pages 158 to 172 of Torneo and Torneo’s Practical Research 1.

Data Collection Method

Instrumentation
1. How do you plan to gather the necessary data for your research?
2. What kind of instrument will you use for this? (Open-ended interview questions)
3. What considerations will you keep in mind once you write this instrument (language use, length
of the questions, number of questions, etc.)? Why?

Example (Note that this is a QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH)

The findings of this study were based on the data gathered from the survey
questionnaire designed by the researcher. It was written taking into consideration
the (1) the ability of the survey to produce data which will fit and answer the
statement of the problems of this study, (2) the ability of the participants to
understand the survey, (4) the attention span of the respondents, (3) the length of
time to be taken in answering the survey, and (4) the confidentiality of the identity of
the respondents since they are minors.
The survey consisted of statements about the students’ use of social media
in teaching literature. These said statements were answered through checking the
boxes of options.
Data Gathering Procedure
1. What are the step-by-step procedure, which you will do to collect the necessary data?

Example (Note that this is a QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH)

Since the main source of data of this study were from the survey
questionnaire, the respondents were given much importance.
The researcher chose one hundred fifty three Grade 9 students from Infant
Jesus Academy of Silang, Inc. as the respondents. Representatives from each of
the six sections were equally distributed.
After the preparation for the study, permission from the school principal and the
administrator were attained by means of personally passing a letter of request to
the office and explaining the reasons for the survey. Upon receiving the letter, they
set the schedule of data gathering four days from that day with the condition
that any personal information of the respondents will be confidential for they are
minors. Along with that, the school also requested for a copy of the research paper
upon its completion to which the researcher agreed.
The researcher personally administered the set of data gathering. It begun
by explaining the reason for such activity and its importance. Survey forms were
distributed and explained by the researcher. The students were given twenty
minutes to complete the forms. Along with the questions answered, respondents
were also encouraged to write their personal feedback on the back of the answered
questionnaires.

Population Frame and Sampling Technique

1. Who are the respondents of the study? How may are they? What were your qualifications in
choosing them? You may refer to your Scope and Delimitation of the Study.
2. What kind of sampling technique did you use to choose your participants? The choices are in
pp. 167 to 172 of Torneo and Torneo’s Practical Research 1.
3. Describe the sampling technique you chose to do?
4. How will you do the sampling technique?

Data Analysis
The data which you will gather will be analyzed thematically. For this you have to look for a
good resource and cite them using the APA citation.
1. What is thematic analysis of qualitative research?
2. How will you do it?

Ethical Considerations in Conducting the Study

1. What ethical consideration will you practice in doing your research? Describe how
you will do it?
