Dimensions
In Sketching – A question asked in training
Dimensions from physical measurement Dimensions given while Sketching
Pin Physical measurement

• All the dimensions are measured

physically on ground to reverse
engineer the part.
• The total length of the Shaft is 307 mm.
• Individual steps dimensions are
measured accordingly, but if you sum
up all the step dimensions the total is
not equal to 307.
i.e. (71.62+28.56+93.61+13.5+28.39+71.70 = 307.38)
Dimensions given while sketching the Pin

• Therefore, to maintain all the

dimensions to the over size of the Pin
minor changes in the precision has to
be made accordingly.
• But, these changes are made according
to the dimensions of the housing in
which this Pin will fit.
• Grey Dimensions are reference
dimensions.
• Blue dimensions are provided as per the Housing dimensions.
• Grey Dimensions are the Reference Dimensions provided to maintain the dimensions taken
while measuring the PIN.
• Therefore, both the necessary conditions are satisfied.
i.e. to main the overall dimensions of the Pin and the step dimensions according to the housing.
• Therefore Reference dimensions are required to maintain the size of the part
w.r.t. the other part dimensions which has direct relation to the fitment of the
two parts in the assembly.
• Also, when Top down assembly approach is applied and the parts are
sketched inside the assembly environment to maintain all the required
relations for proper fitment.
