Students with speech and language impairments have difficulties effectively communicating and exchanging ideas with others due to developmental or acquired disorders that impact the brain. These disorders can range from moderate to profound and may be the primary or secondary disability. Students receive screening, assessments and treatment from a speech and language pathologist to address their communication difficulties. Teachers can support students in the classroom through strategies like modeling, reading aloud, and self-talk incorporated into lesson plans, while teachers and parents receive additional support resources.
