COMMENTS AND ISSUES ENCOUNTERED IN ENHANCING THE STUDY HABITS

AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SILANG ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AS A

LEARNING SERVICE PROVIDER

One of our goals as teachers is to provide learners with opportunities to become active,
critical thinkers, who move beyond a view of learning as information gathering to a view of
learning as knowledge building.

There are many factors why some learners in our school have poor study habits and
have poor academic performance. One of these factors is the lack of support from parents in
their studies, like they tend to neglect their children in helping them making their assignments
and projects. They have also different family backgrounds. That is why some are slow learners
and some are fast learners.

There should be a seminar-workshop for parents on how to improve children’s reading,

and writing skills. This is because reading and writing are connected with each other. A learner
who cannot read cannot write and vice versa. These will be a hindrance for learners in
achieving good study habits and academic performance.

By using technology in the classroom will be of great help for learners today. It will keep
them informed, familiar and if possible, use, modern instructional educational tools.

Motivation is a help for the fulfillment of education’s functions in preparing the pupil for
self-reliance, self –control, and self- discipline.
 COMMENTS AND ISSUES ENCOUNTERED IN ABSENTEEISM AND LOW
PERFORMANCE/ STUDY HABITS OF PUPILS

One of the problems of the pupils in the school was absenteeism especially if they do
not like the teacher who handles them. Even if they are present, they are not paying attention.
When the teacher gives them a quiz, naturally they have low performance so the teacher
decided to have a contest between the boys and the girls. Most behaved pupils will be given a
reward and a prize and it was effective because most of the pupils behaved inside the class and
most of them have a high performance.
 IMPRESSIONS ON ENHANCING THE STUDY HABITS AND ACADEMIC OF
SILANG ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Achieving quality education is the ultimate goal of SES. It is expected that in the
elementary level the full development of the basic learning which are reading, writing,
arithmetic and rational thinking. Many children express themselves in sentences with correct
pronunciation. One does not only project his thoughts but also lies whole self. I can see that
through this project, many pupils improved their academic performance with the support of
their parents as well as their teachers. As a teacher of 17 pupils it really demands a lot of
patience, hard work and understanding. Truly these 3 ingredients help a lot in the
improvement of children particularly in their study habits.
 COMMENTS AND ISSUES ENCOUNTERED IN FAILURE OF 1 PUPIL IN GRADE 1
AND LOW PERFORMANCE/ STUDY HABITS

As a Grade 1 teacher, these are my comments and issues encountered in my class with
different habits, performance and background. Their performance was affected by the
following:

1. Absenteeism
2. Poor study habits
3. Parents don’t have time to monitor their child’s academic and reading problems.
4. Slow in identifying relationship between sounds and letters
5. Could not memorize the sounds of letters
6. The children are not prepared mentally, physically and socially for the task in reading
and other activities.
7. The learners have the hard time to express themselves orally.
8. Lack of communication from parents to child and from teacher to parents
9. Most of the time the children have no assignments and projects.
10. Collaborative efforts to improve performance of our pupils is important because we
want quality education.
