Culture is symbolic communication.

Some of its symbols include group skills, knowledge,

attitudes, values, and motivations. The meanings of symbols are learned and deliberately
perpetuated in society through their institutions. Culture consists of patterns, explicit and
implicit, and for behavior obtained and transmitted by symbols, which constitute the
distinctive achievement of human groups, including their incarnations in handicrafts; the
essence of the basic culture consists of traditional ideas and especially their associated
values; On the one hand, they can be seen as the product of action, on the other hand,
affect the adaptation of additional actions. "Cultural encounters" are the confrontation of
different cultures to each other, whether customs or traditions or way of speaking or race
and others, and these "gatherings" of the way of "globalization", where globalization opens
doors to meet cultures.

Zadi Smith was born in London to a Jamaican and an English father. She knows perfectly well
that "cultural encounters" is not an easy subject, and she has made a good effort to include
this concept in her story. The narrator of the story is a third person, giving an intense
perspective on the characters, as she rooted her roots in the story, Martha's character
"black, English father and Nigerian mother" is pretty much like Zaidi herself. Zaidi uses words
to express this concept as well. She uses short answers for non-English people, "I make
mistake. Sorry, please". She also explains who Pam is at the beginning of the story using
"Mid-Western by birth." The scenario can also be included in this story. It shows the
difference between Pam's treatment of Martha and her treatment of Joseph. She gives an
idea of what a young Nigerian girl is looking for, and what an English girl thinks she deserves
based on her price. We always see in the text that the words of Pam are contradictory and
have a long dialogue compared to Martha, which uses words that are not in their place
"man", "arking".
