Science 10 – Chemical Equations - Answers

1. When zinc metal and sulfur powder are heated, they form solid zinc sulfide.

Zn(s) + S(s) → ZnS(s)

2. Aluminum metal plus hydrogen chloride gas yields solid aluminum chloride plus
hydrogen gas.
Al(s) + HCl(g) → AlCl3(s) + H2(g)

3. Water vapour is formed from the explosive reaction between hydrogen gas and oxygen
gas.
H2(g) + O2(g) → H2O(g)

4. When sodium metal is placed in a beaker of water, hydrogen gas and a sodium hydroxide
solution are formed.
Na(s) + H2O(l) → H2(g) + NaOH(aq)

5. Sodium metal plus chlorine gas combine to form solid sodium chloride.
Na(s) + Cl2(g) → NaCl(s)

6. Barium chloride and magnesium sulfate combine to produce barium sulfate and
magnesium chloride.
BaCl2(aq) + MgSO4(aq) → BaSO4(aq) + MgCl2(aq)

7. Cupric oxide breaks down into copper and oxygen.

CuO(s) → Cu(s) + O2(g)

8. Methane and oxygen combine to create carbon dioxide and water.

CH4(s) + O2(g) → CO2(g) + H2O(l)

9. Iron (II) oxide breaks down into iron and oxygen.

FeO(s) → Fe(s) + O2(g)

10. Sodium hydroxide and hydrogen chloride combine to create sodium chloride and
dihydrogen monoxide.
NaOH(aq) + HCl(aq) → NaCl(s) + H2O(l)
