Lesson 1- Readings in Philippine History

Doing History: A Guide for Students
Objectives:
At the end of this lesson, you will be able to:
1. discuss online historical research;
2. develop self-phase learning on online historical
research;
3. integrate technology in the discipline of history.

Introduction
It is not enough for us to know our roots. We must also
recognize that, as agents of social change, we will contribute to
the history of the country by engaging in the writing of our past
and our present.
This lesson focuses on applying the skills in writing history
that we have gained in the previous chapters. Special attention
will be paid to online research, bibliography / archival research,
biography / life history, and local / oral history. An additional
discussion about how to communicate with history through
historical shrines and museums will also allow us to understand
past history when it comes to life through our own experience
of exploring and engaging with these learning spaces.

Name: Claire Cabactulan

ANSWER:
A. Rizal Park Complex, Manila
Rizal Park has always played a role in the country’s
history, development and consciousness and has been an
integral part of the urban fabric and Philippine society. It
has enjoyed periods of significance as well as decline as it
mirrored the changing circumstances of events occurring
in its existence and surrounding context and communities.
The focus of the Master Plan is on preserving the
historic and cultural value of the Park, its natural context
and economic sustainability with a strong emphasis on
connecting the people to this and to each other from
yesterday, today to tomorrow.

B. Intramuros
Intramuros is known in history as the “Walled
City” because of its most famous feature: a nearly three-
mile-long circuit of massive stone walls and fortifications
that almost completely surrounds the entire district. It is
the oldest district and historic core of Manila where old
Spanish era influences are still plentiful. Photography and
history lovers will find Intramuros an interesting
destination. If you visit the place, you can still feel the
Spanish ambiance and appreciate the historical landmarks
and churches in the area. Plus, visiting Intramuros is very
affordable and worth your time. Going here, you can re-
experience the past in a modern light.

C. MACARTHUR LANDING MEMORIAL NATIONAL PARK

Commonly known as MacArthur Park, is one of
Leyte’s significant landmarks.  It is where the famous
bronze statue of General Douglas MacArthur is found
which commemorates his historic return to the island of
Leyte on the early afternoon of October 20, 1944. Built
along with the stutue of the brave General are his landing
Filipino companions – then President Sergio Osmeña,
General Carlos Romulo and four other soldiers. Because of
the park’s significance in the history of the Philippines, the
same has been declared as a National Historical Landmark
in the year 2004. Inscribed on a marble wall in front of the
bronze statues is General MacArthur’s promise to return
which have been kept in the hearts of all Leyteños. Indeed,
a well-preserved promise that while it has already been
fulfilled, it continues to give hope to the present
generation. The Park is located at Brgy. Candahug, Palo,
Leyte which is three (3) kilometers away from the town
proper.

D. BANAUE RICE TERRACES IN IFUGAO

The Banaue Rice Terraces are terraces that were
carved into the mountains of Banaue, Ifugao, in the
Philippines, by the ancestors of the indigenous people. It
is commonly thought that the terraces were built with
minimal equipment, largely by hand. The terraces are
located approximately 1,500 metres (4,900 feet) above sea
level. These are fed by an ancient irrigation system from
the rainforests above the terraces. It has captured the
interest of both local and international travelers because of
its rich culture, cool weather, untouched mountain ranges
and the warmth of the local Ifugao people. Banaue is also
home to the most picturesque and awe-inspiring rice
terraces that stretch for miles into the horizon.

Analysis
1. Do you appreciate the preservation of the historical sites
in the country? Why or Why not?

Yes, I appreciate the preservation of the historical

sites in the country because I believe that it is good to
preserve historical sites because they have historical and
cultural significance and economic value. These sites may
have an important function in history and some are even
the nations’ pride. These historical sites are helpful in
identifying the background of a country. Infrastructure of
such buildings shows the creativity and talent of the labour
class people during that time and even helps to know
about the lifestyle of the people in that era. There are
other benefits of maintaining such buildings i.e. ancient
buildings attract tourism from and across the world.
Tourism is an important measure in economical growth of
a country. Therefore, history plays an important role in
getting a better knowledge about any country’s culture,
traditions, beliefs, religions etc. Without history one would
have no idea about his origin and the struggle done by the
freedom fighters and various other people for freedom and
other human rights. The history of a community
contributes to its personality. Preserving the history of a
place through its significant historic resources gives a
community its unique character. Historic preservation
provides a link to the roots of the community and its
people. Overall, historic preservation adds to the quality of
life making for a more livable community. Historic
preservation involves much more than simply saving and
restoring old buildings and sites of historic importance;
there are economic, cultural, environmental, and
educational benefits of historic preservation, all of which
are inextricably connected to one another and to the living
memory of involved communities.

2. Have you been visited any of the historical sites in the

Philippines? Enumerate at least 2 and give your
impressions?
1. Macabalan Wharf

I live in Salay Misamis Oriental, Cagayan De Oro

City for 16 years. One of the historical site that I visited is
the Macabalan Wharf. This site is Mac Arthur's arrival to
the city via Macabalaban wharf in Macabalan village on
Monday morning. You can really feel the excitement to
visit one of the historical places. It's really good to see
parts of the Philippines to preserve the Filipino-American
history. Knowing that Mac Arthur is an American five-star
general and Field Marshal of the Philippine Army. He was
Chief of Staff of the United States Army during the 1930s
and played a prominent role in the Pacific theater during
World War II. I also read quotes and saying that was from
him.
2. City Museum of Cagayan De Oro

City museum of Cagayan de Oro which is located in

front of Gastorn Park which one of the historical places in the
heart of the City. It formerly a Water Tank Tower built in 1922
but it was renovated and improved into a museum in 2008. It is
the oldest public structure in the city as it has withstood the
bombings during the war. It was recognized by the city
government as National Museum of the Philippines for its
“adaptive reuse of a heritage structure”. When I personally
visited the museum, it is really old. It has 3 levels, the ground
level where photos of famous Kagay-anons who made a big
contribution to the city which allow you to take photos while
second and third floor hold photos of the lifestyle and events of
the old city.
