GLNG Project – 435 km (270 miles)

GLNG is a project to convert coal seam gas

(CSG) to liquefied natural gas (LNG),
representing a major investment in a cleaner
energy source for the future.

The project is led by Santos, Australia’s

largest domestic gas producer, in partnership
with PETRONAS, Malaysia’s national oil and
gas company and the world’s second largest
LNG exporter.

GLNG Project – Survey Requirements

1. Survey control
2. Ground survey confirmation and marking
of desk top route selection
3. Profile 40 meter wide pipeline corridor
4. Data collector format - GIS
5. Export data to 3rd party to produce alignment
plans

NT Spatial 2011 – The State of Play

1. Survey Control
ƒ Primary control marks placed
5-8Km (3-5 Miles) along the
whole route for RTK coverage
ƒ Tied to 1st order control marks
ƒ Using 4 Trimble R8GNSS
Receivers – 15 days to complete
ƒ Accuracy +/- 20mm

2. Ground Survey Confirmation and
Marking of Desk top route selection
ƒ Desk top route selection was found to be
lacking when on the ground- Approximate only.
ƒ Route realigned in areas, with consultation from
the site construction manager and land holders.
ƒ Numerous issues to resolve.
ƒ One survey team used post process RTK
method to locate and mark major bends on the
realignments. – 20mm accuracy from 30km
(19 mile) base line.
ƒ This data was used by follow up survey teams
to profile the new route.

2. Ground Survey Confirmation and Marking
of Desk top route selection – issues
ƒ Profile 150m high escarpments for the purpose
of directional drilling. – Best route for
directional route.
ƒ Use of Old Logging Tracks – worked well but
hard to locate on the ground.
ƒ Safety – Areas of thick timber and cliffs
ƒ Wild animal – wild Bores

3. Profile 40 meter wide Pipeline Corridor
ƒ 6 Fyfe Survey Crews used Trimble R8 GNSS
receivers plus another 3 Crews from our partner
firm using Trimble R8 GNSS receivers.
ƒ Profile and locate all features within pipeline
corridor
ƒ Mark centerline of pipeline at all bends, crossings
and on all straights.
ƒ Located all potential risks to pipe within 300m each
side of pipeline.
ƒ All features to have an attribute assigned.
ƒ All pipeline crossings to be detailed to represent a
true picture of the crossing.
ƒ Field data sent to base office (Roma) for review and
correlation, then sent to Head office. (Adelaide)

3. Survey Problems

ƒ Coordinate Zone Boundary

ƒ Map Grid of Australia Zone 55/56
ƒ Nominated North/South Road
– 7km (4.3 Miles) east of actual zone
boundary.
ƒ Produced data in 2 sets of coordinates,
100m either side of the road.

5. Export Data to 3rd
rd Party to Produce

Alignment Plans
ƒ Imported all field data (Text & Attribute)
from Trimble TGO Software into Carlson
Survey/AutoCAD Package.
ƒ Undertook any editing and produced
centerline in Carlson.
ƒ Export data from AutoCAD to MapInfo/GIS
System.
ƒ Sent Client weekly updates of the acquired
data, both in AutoCAD and MapInfo format,
this allowed for design work as the field data
was captured.
