imagePROGRAF W7200/W7250/W6200/W8200 Service Reference Guide

I. Product Overview
The Canon® imagePROGRAF® W7200 and W7250 Large Format Printers are 36”
and 24” wide respectively. Featuring a six-color print head with advanced
MicroFine Droplet Technology®, these large format printers are optimized for
graphic output and deliver high quality printing of 600x1200 dpi in normal mode.
The large-volume ink tanks were designed with productivity in mind, with key
operational efficiencies, and for a variety of media types.
The imagePROGRAF W8200 Large Format Printer is 44” wide, supports up to
44” media, and uses either pigment or dye inks.
imagePROGRAF W8200 Only: Once the type of head and ink (pigment or dye)
has been set, the printer cannot be converted to the other type. If the incorrect
head is mounted, even if by mistake, conversion to the other head type will not be
possible. Therefore, the correct pigment or dye model must be selected at the
time of purchase. The Dye model is identified as the imagePROGRAF W8200D
and the Pigment model is imagePROGRAF W8200Pg. When the
imagePROGRAF W8200 is mentioned throughout this Service Reference Guide
it refers to both models unless otherwise specified.
The imagePROGRAF W6200 supports up to 24” media and uses pigment ink.
As an ENERGY STAR® Partner, Canon U.S.A., Inc. has determined that this
product meets the ENERGY STAR guidelines for energy efficiency.
II. Design Features
A. Canon Graphic RIP
The Canon Graphic RIP software package includes: PS3 interpreter
engine, hot-folder workflow, print server capability, ICC profile based color
management, color curve editing, and press simulation. Both Microsoft®
Windows® and Macintosh® Operating System platforms are supported:
Windows 2000/XP, MacOS® 9.1, 9.2.
B. Ink Delivery System
High quality photo printing at a high resolution of up to 600x1200 dpi for
the imagePROGRAF W7200 and W7250 and up to 1200 x 1200 dpi for
the imagePROGRAF W6200 and W8200 1 delivered from a 6-color ink
system: Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black, Photo Magenta, and Photo Cyan.
The ink is tube-fed from large-capacity ink tanks to the print head.
C. Print Head Technology
The print-head features the advanced MicroFine Droplet Technology in
which there is a 7,680 nozzle head with a 1200 dpi pitch for a total of
1,280 nozzles for each color with bi-directional printing control.

1
The ink delivery system is the same for both dye and pigment ink. The pigment ink is only available for the imagePROGRAF
W8200Pg and W6200 and supports 1200 x 1200 dpi on all media types. The imagePROGRAF W8200D supports 1200 x 1200 dpi
on commercial proofing grade only.

D. High-Speed Printing
High-Speed Printing is achieved through the ink delivery system combined
with the print head technology to deliver ultra-high quality prints.

W8200Pg (Pigment Ink) -– A0 size (not including data transmission time)
A0 Size (Heavy Coated Paper) Approx. 2 min. Approx. 5 min. Approx. 9 min.

E. Media
Both roll and cut-sheet media are supported. Roll media is loaded in the
front by simply pulling out the tray, placing the roll inside the unit, feeding
the paper up through the rollers (from the back with the W6200), and
closing the tray. For cut-sheet media, line up the paper with the white
guide mark on top of the tray, and hand feed single sheets.
F. Automatic Cutting For Roll Media
The imagePROGRAF W7200/W7250/W6200/W8200 are equipped with an
automatic cutter. This standard feature automatically cuts roll media once
printing is completed. In order to maintain stable cutting performance, the
cutter blade height can be adjusted to one of three levels.
Although the imagePROGRAF W7200/W7250/W6200/W8200 all support
automatic cutting, the cutter for the imagePROGRAF W8200 has been
improved with a round cutter blade instead of a straight blade and is more
durable.
G. Print Drivers
The Canon Graphic RIP software (standard on the W8200 and W6200)
includes the PS3 emulation software and the original GARO (Graphic
Language with Raster Operation). The GARO is a Microsoft Windows
based printer driver on Canon’s original raster language, that allows the
user to set ICC and ICM profiles. It provides color-matching using the
driver’s functions and the ICC Correction mode. Other color adjustment
features include color balance, contrast, and density.

D. Estimated Installation Time

The installation time is approximate and is based upon installation by the
end-user. Since the printer is large and heavy, at least two people should
unpack and install the unit.
Included in the calculation of the estimated installation time are the
following:
• Unpacking and assembly of the stand
• Unpacking and installing the printer (main unit) on a stand or
table
• Installing the head, ink tanks, and connecting the power
cable
• Checking the printer operation, and adjusting printing
position.
• Connecting the printer to a computer and printer driver
installation.
Excluded in the calculation of the estimated installation time is the
following:

• Power outlet preparation

• Installation space preparation

The following chart includes the estimated installation times for installing
the printer and the stand based on the above conditions:

V. Service Policy
A. Authorized Service Providers
Service is provided through a Canon authorized service provider or through a
3rd party service company managed by CITS (Canon Information Technology
Services). Canon authorized service providers are expected to service the
equipment they sell. Since these products are available through a sales-only
distribution channel, the serial number of the product must be registered to
the service provider of record through the ASCR System (refer to the ASCR
System on Page 11) in order to ensure that service is not provided through a
3rd party service company.
B. Authorization Policy
To become service authorized and maintain authorization to service the
imagePROGRAF models, each service provider’s location must have at least
one technician who has successfully completed the Training Program and
received certified status.
C. Warranty Conditions
The imagePROGRAF Large Format Printer Limited Warranty is effective for a
period of one-year following delivery to the original purchaser. No warranty is
given for any consumables, such as paper, ink cartridges, and print heads.
Refer to the Warranty terms and conditions in the Appendix for complete
details.
D. Warranty Reimbursement
There are two warranty reimbursement programs available for service
providers: Dispatch by CITS, or the Warranty Marketing Program. Both
programs require the customer serial number be registered through the
ASCR system.
1) Dispatch by CITS
To obtain reimbursement for service delivered during the end-user
warranty, you must be dispatched by CITS. For this to occur, the end-
user must contact CITS first to attempt all user-performed service
remedies. Should these not resolve the problem, the Servicer of
record will be dispatched (see ASCR process for instructions on how
to register your company as the Servicer of record.) Labor
compensation of $135 per incident will automatically be issued to the
dispatched service provider (your company) once the service call has
been closed with CITS. Defective parts reimbursement will be issued
upon receipt of an e-Tag claim with the defective part.

Rev. 3
imagePROGRAF W7200/W7250/W6200/W8200 Service Reference Guide

2) Warranty Marketing Program

Some Service Providers may choose to have their own help desk
serve as the "call avoidance entity" rather than CITS. This places the
burden of having an effective in-warranty call avoidance process upon
the service provider. Service calls performed under this arrangement
are not eligible for labor reimbursement under the process described
above. Instead, a flat-rate of $24.00 will be issued to a service
provider for each product (serial number) they choose to support in this
manner. The ASCR process allows the service provider to select this
option and it is incumbent on the service provider to provide service
support that is consistent with commercially acceptable standards. In
cases where the service provider has accepted the flat-rate payment
but has not provided service support to the end-user, the service
provide could lose authorization to service the product.
E. ASCR (Authorized Servicer Customer Registration) System
The ASCR System is the venue used to link the Customer’s product serial
number to the service provider. Register your customers’ product serial
number to your service organization, and choose either to use CITS to
dispatch calls to your dealership, or select the Warranty Marketing Program
option. Unregistered products default to CITS support. There are three
possibilities for customer support:
1. ASCR Registered Customers (without choosing Warranty Marketing
Program option): Help desk support will be managed by CITS with
dispatch to the Service Provider of record.
2. ASCR Registered Customers (choosing the Warranty Marketing
Program option): The Service Provider of record will handle 100% of all
Customer Support. Should the customer contact CITS, CITS will
redirect the call to the Service Provider of record.
3. Unregistered Serial Numbers: Help desk support will be managed by
CITS with dispatch supported by a 3rd party service company.
The ASCR System can be accessed through the e-Support website in the
Warranty section. In order to access the ACSR system, you will be required
to re-enter your e-Support ID and password; if your ID and password does
not work, instructions to enable it will appear. Select “New ASCR” to enter
each model serial number into the system.

F. e-Tag System
Canon provides reimbursement for defective parts replaced in support of the
end-user warranty. Reimbursement is requested through the e-Tag system,
found under the “Warranty” tab on e-Support. Complete all applicable fields
on the e-Tag form and attach it to the defective part. Send the part and form
to the address provided by the e-Tag system. Reimbursement will be
processed and a credit mailed within 15-business days. Labor
reimbursement is provided at the time the ASCR Warranty Marketing
Program option is selected.
G. End-User CITS Support
CITS also supports the end-user. Via toll free access, the CITS Call Center
takes the first call from the customer and provides assistance as follows:
• Answers product related questions.
• Assists the end-user with pre-and post sales inquires.
• Redirects Customer calls to the Service provider of record. If there is no
Service provider of record, CITS will:
o Attempt to resolve hardware, software, and operational problems.
o When telephone based troubleshooting fails to resolve a problem,
service will be dispatched accordingly.

VII. Technical Training

A. Overview
The imagePROGRAF W7200/W7250 & BJ-W7000 training course is a
Self-Paced Training Program geared to familiarize the technician with the
installation, operations, and maintenance of the imagePROGRAF
W7200/W7250/W6200/W8200 and BJ-W7000. This course consists of
illustrations, detailed text descriptions, practical labs, fundamentals of
Bubble-Jet technology, and other supporting systems.
The training also includes troubleshooting and diagnostic techniques to
support the products in both stand-alone and networked environments.
B. Certification
Upon successful completion of the program, the Service Manager will
submit the completed examination to the Canon Regional Training
Coordinator. Submission instructions and forms are provided within the
courseware. The technician will receive certification based on review of
the final examination.
Automatic certification on the imagePROGRAF W8200 and W6200 will
be granted to those technicians who are already imagePROGRAF
W7200/W7250 or BJ-W7000 certified.
Note: Unlike the imagePROGRAF W8200, which is constructed
similarly to the imagePROGRAF W7200/W7250 printers, the
imagePROGRAF W6200 outer covers are of a new design and their
removal must be done with the use of a W6200 Service Manual to
ensure correct disassembly procedure.
C. Materials
The imagePROGRAF W7200/W7250/W6200/W8200 is combined with the
BJ-W7000 in this Self-Paced Training Course, which consists of a
Technical Reference Manual and Instructional Guide that outlines and
sequences the course materials.
To complete the course, it is strongly recommended that each student
have one of the following machines available: an imagePROGRAF
W7200/W7250/W8200 or a BJ-W7000.
