1. GENERAL
There are two methods to protect the HRSG heat transfer internal surfaces :
a) Dry Lay-up method
b) Wet Lay-up method
It is generally considered that the Dry Lay-up method is more effective.
The Wet Lay-up method is frequently used when the HRSG is shut-down for a short period of
time or the HRSG is expected to be rapidly on line again or freezing is not a problem.
. Wet Lay-up
Case A: Medium shut-down (outage) period (maximum 2 weeks) and or If freezing is a not
problem,
A.1 The HRSG shall be filled with deaerated alkaline feedwater up to the top of the drum
level gauge, containing 200ppm hydrazine (N2H4) with nitrogen cap applied.
A.2 The superheater sections shall be sealed with nitrogen gas (N2).
. Dry Lay-up
Case B : Long shut-down outage period (more than 2 weeks) or If freezing is a problem,
The HRSG should be drained under a nitrogen blanket and stored with a slight
positive N2 pressure(min. 0.2 barg) on the boiler.
The following are mandatory requirements for the nitrogen gas sealing method :
2-1 Decrease the HRSG pressure down to 1.5 barG, in accordance with HRSG shut down
procedure. If air is in the HRSG, air should be removed by means of following methods
whichever suits:
1) Increase the HRSG drum pressure to 1.5 barG.
2) Fill up with water completely.
2-2 After the HRSG pressure has reached the 1.5 barG, the water existing in the HRSG shall
be gradually drained by opening the blow off valves(HP section: 1HAH31AA051,
1HAH32AA051, 1HAH33AA051, 1HAC30AA401~406, 1HAD40AA401~402, LP section :
1LBB20AA051, 1HAD60AA401~402, Deaerator section : 1HAC80AA401~403,
1HAD90AA401~402)
2-3 When nitrogen gas, instead of water, starts to come out from the blowdown tank outlet (to
the sump), drums blow off valves shall be closed(HP section: 1HAH31AA051,
1HAH32AA051, 1HAH33AA051, 1HAC30AA401~406, 1HAD40AA401~402, LP section :
1LBB20AA051, 1HAD60AA401~402, Deaerator section : 1HAC80AA401~403,
1HAD90AA401~402)
2-5 After all HRSG sections have been filled with nitrogen gas, all valves shall be closed.
2-6 The nitrogen pressure in all sections shall be maintained at 0.5 barG (min. 0.2 barG).
Nitrogen gas shall be recharged when the pressure reaches 0.3 barG. The nitrogen gas
pressure in all sections shall be checked with the related existing pressure gauges.
2-8 As the HRSG cools to the ambient temperature, the nitrogen gas pressure shall be
checked frequently because HRSG cooling will decrease nitrogen pressure.
Note) The volumes of the HRSG components for nitrogen gas filling lay-up are as follows, this
value can be changed slightly due to piping route.

3-10 Hydrazines shall be added, as required, to maintain the proportion of 100 to 200 ppm.
3-11 HRSG water level shall be checked. If required, additional feedwater shall be filled in.
Also, hydrazine shall be filled in, in order to maintain the required proportion.
3-12 During the Wet Lay-up, the HRSG superheater sections will be filled and sealed in with
nitrogen gas, as follows :
3-12-1 After the drum pressure has reached 1.5 barG, charge the pressurized nitrogen
gas into the superheater the air vent valve(1HAH31AA501~502, 1LBA30AA052,
1HAJ50AA501~502) of each steam drum with draining from the superheater
4. MISCELLANEOUS RECOMMENDATIONS
At the beginning of the "Lay Up" method, the combustion gas side shall also be inspected.
Soot, etc. must be removed. The surface of the drums, tubes and the combustion gas side
should be inspected for corrosion.
Gas side corrosion typically occurs when moist air is present with tube deposits containing
sulfuric acid or other fuel-borne contaminants. The gas side can only be laid up dry, and
Electrical Heaters should be used to prevent condensate. And also silica gel can be placed
inside the gas side. The quantities are 0.5 kg / m3. Periodic inspection of the gas side should
be performed to ensure that conditions promoting rapid corrosion are not present.
