Q1: (25 Marks)

Answer the following questions:
1. Can we add extra resistance in series with squirrel cage rotor? State the reason?
2. What care should be taken at the time of construction to reduce eddy current losses in
induction motor?
3. Why it is not possible for the rotor speed of an induction motor to be equal to the speed of
its rotating magnetic field?
4. What is the condition for developing the maximum power (gross mechanical power) of DC
machine?
5. State the total losses in a DC generator?

Q2: (15 Marks)

Define the circuit breaker? State the methods that circuit breakers sense the circuit current and
explain one of them?

Q3: (20 Marks)

A 4 pole, 240 V, wave connected shunt motor gives 11.19 kW when running at 1000 r.p.m. and
drawing armature and field currents of 50 A and 0.1 A respectively. It has 540 conductors. Its
resistance is 0.1 . Assuming a drop of 1 volt per brush. Find (a) total torque, (b) useful torque (c)
useful flux/pole, (d) rotational losses and (e) efficiency.

Q4: (25 Marks)

A 460-V, 25-hp, 60 Hz, four-pole, Y-connected induction motor has the following impedances in
ohms per phase referred to the stator circuit:
R1= 0.641 R2= 0.332
X1= 1.106  X2= 0.464  XM= 26.3 
The total rotational losses are 1100 W and are assumed to be constant. The core loss is lumped in
with the rotational losses. For a rotor slip of 2.2 percent at the rated voltage and rated frequency,
find the motor’s:
1) Speed, 2) Stator current, 3) Power factor, 4) Pconv & Pout, 5) ind & load and 6) Efficiency.

Q5: (15 Marks)

A 60 Ω resistor, a 0.6 H inductor, and an 8 µF capacitor are connected in series with a 120-V, 60 Hz
ac source. Calculate the impedance and the current for this circuit.
