Answer questions 1-3 according to the following text.

My Town – Newquay
by Alex Howarth, 14
I live in Newquay. It’s a small town on the Atlantic coast in the south of England. It has got great beaches and is the
best place to surf in the UK. There are lots of surf schools where you can learn how to surf. I go surfing with my friends
every weekend. My favourite place is Fistral Beach.
I love Newquay because there are lots of other things to do as well as surfing. If you like water sports, you can go
kayaking, water-skiing or coasteering. Coasteering is different because it is rock climbing, jumping into the sea and
swimming in the same activity, but you should always go with a special instructor.
If you like animals you can also visit the Blue Reef Aquarium and see lots of different fish and even sharks. You can
also go horse riding on the beach or visit Newquay Zoo. There are lots of other attractions too like mini golf and
bowling. Come and see for yourself!

1. What does Alex go surfing with?

A. People in his town.

B. His classmates.

CULTURAL DIVERSITY

Culture is the lens with which we evaluate everything around us; we

evaluate what is proper or improper, normal or abnormal, through our
culture. If we are immersing in a culture that is unlike our own, we may
experience culture shock and become disoriented when we come into
contrast with fundamentally different culture. People naturally use
their own-essentially, we tend to fear that which don’t understand.

Cultural diversity is important because our country, workplaces, and schools increasingly consist of various
cultural, racial, and ethnic groups. We learn from one to another, but first we must have a level of understanding
Cu
about each other in order to facilitate collaboration and cooperation. Learning about other cultures helps us to
understand different perspectives within the world which we live, and helps to get rid of negative stereotypes and
personal biases about different groups.

In addition, cultural diversity helps us to recognize and respect ¨ways of being¨ that are not necessary our own,
so that as we interact with others, we can build bridges to trust, respect and understanding across cultures.
Furthermore, this diversity makes our country a more interesting place to live, as people from diverse cultures
contribute language skills, new ways of thinking, new knowledge, and different experiences.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE BRAIN WHEN A PERSON TAKES DRUGS?

Most drugs affect the brain’s “reward circuit,” causing extreme happiness as well as flooding it with the chemical messenger
dopamine. A properly functioning reward system motivates a person to repeat behaviors needed to thrive, such as eating and
spending time with loved ones. An increase in the amount of dopamine in the reward circuit causes people to repeat
pleasurable but unhealthy behaviours, like taking drugs.

As people continue to use drugs, the brain adapts by reducing the ability of cells in the reward circuit to respond to the drugs.
This reduces the ‘high’ that the people feel compared to the ‘high’ that they felt when they first started taking the drugs—an
effect known as tolerance. They might take more of the drug to try to achieve the same ‘high.’

These brain adaptations often lead to people becoming less and less able to derive pleasure from other things they once
enjoyed, like food, social activities etc. Long-term use also causes changes in other brain chemical systems and circuits as
well, affecting functions that include:

• learning judgment decision-making

• stress memory behavior
Despite being aware of these harmful outcomes, many people who use drugs continue to take them, which is the nature of
addiction.
