II. Brush Up

1. Basco implemented a “general economic plan” aimed at making the Philippines

self sufficient. He established the “Economic Society of Friends of the Country”, which
gave incentives to farmers for planting cotton, spices, and sugarcane; encouraged miners
to extract gold, silver, tin, and copper; and rewarded investors for scientific discoveries
they made.

2. General Jose Basco had plans to promote agriculture in Philippines. Basco explained to
the Spanish king that the tobacco monopoly would help Philippines to increase it’s finance. On
March 1, 1782, Governor General Jose Basco established the tobacco monopoly. But, the
tobacco production in Philippines is under Governor General Jose Basco control.

3. Provinces that allowed to plant tobacco other than mentioned was La Union, Isabela,
Abra. Each of these provinces planted nothing but tobacco and sold their harvest only to
government. No other provinces was allowed to plant tobacco.

4. It was “Very Satisfactory” for me. Even though we don’t have our own freedom since we
are under controlled by the Spaniards during the time of Rizal. By late nineteenth
century,Philippines was known to its export of tobacco, abaca, and sugar. We already produce
goods to export for other country

5. It’s for us to have a differ knowledge about not just about Rizal’s life but also to know
how our economy was developed during their time.
III. React

1. The Manila-Acapulco route created a cultural exchange that shaped the identities and
cultures of the countries involved.

Galleon trade play a big roll in our history, since our country become the central port
trading of different countries, we tend to adapt some of their ways because there are many
foreign countries trying to do their business in our country during the Galleon Trade. We tend
to adapt some of their identities and cutures.

2. The Galleon trade was a government monopoly.

It was actually because, Governor General Jose Basco govern the trade of tobacco,
abaca, and sugar as well. But the Philippines is known as one of the exporter of tobacco and
the start of growth in the worldwide trading.

3. The Philippines had a glorious past but was marred by Spaniards colonialization.

The Spaniards wasn’t totally marred our past, Spaniards played a big roll in our history
since Spaniards influence Filipinos. When the Spanish rule ended, we found many aspects of
their way of life bearing some of the cultures of Spaniards. Also, Spaniards enriched our
languages, many Spanish words found their way into the Tagalog and Visayan languages.

4. The Rizal law was strongly opposed by the Roman Catholic church in the Philippines
due to the anti-clerical themes in Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo.

It because our country doesn’t have it’s own freedom yet, Rizal write this book as he was
opposed by the Roman Catholic church in the Philippines. Many Friars are abuse because
they have the power also to govern and lead every person in time of Rizal.

5. Are you favor for the teaching of Jose Rizal’s Life, Works, and Writings in college?
Including his two novels?

Yes, I am. Because Mr. Jose Rizal prove that “Pen is mightier than any swords.” because
for Rizal, violence or armed resistance only as a last resort and considered the restoration of
the people’s dignity as a justification means of achieving national and self-rule. We also need
to recognize the importance of Rizal’s ideals and teachings in relation to present conditions
and situations in our society. We also need to develop the Filipino youth in all aspects of
citizenship. Also, we need to have a also differ knowledge for us students to be inspired by
the work of Rizal
Reflection

Things I have learned:

I’ve learned that during the time of Rizal, our economic development are starting to
grow. The tobacco monopoly also help our country to grow, not just only in tobacco but also
in abaca and sugar.

Things I have realized and appreciated:

I realized that there’s a lot of things we can learn from our country’s history. That our
history is precious. What we are now today is because of our history. We started as a country
where we don’t have any identities and only known as the central port of trading system.

Things I have discovered:

I discovered many things in this lessons, on how our economy grow and how our country
adapt the culture of Spaniards and other countries that colonized our country.
