The Law Firm of Mark C. Collins CO LPA represents Jason Meade.

Out of respect for the process,

and because this is a criminal investigation, we are unable to comment on any of the specific
details. The agencies that are conducting the investigation, the FBI and the CPD Critical Incident
Response Team, are highly trained and experienced in handling these types of cases. We
believe they will do a professional, thorough, and unbiased investigation. We are confident that
the investigation will not be rushed.

Last Friday, a mother lost a son, and siblings lost a brother based on the actions of our client
while on duty. We, too, share in the frustration and heartbreak with the family’s loss, and as a
parent, I cannot fathom losing a child. Our hearts go out to the family.

Each and every use of force case, whether non-deadly or lethal, is distinct and unique from
others. These cases are complex and convoluted as the intricacies surrounding the law on
police involved shootings are different than any other non-police defendant accused of a crime
resulting in a loss of life. The standards outlined in the United States Supreme Court Graham v.
Connor, set forth the parameters regarding the use of lethal force. An officer must believe that
he or she is in fear of imminent serious physical injury or death. This must be viewed through
the lens of a reasonable police officer based on training, experience, and the totality of the
circumstances.

The authorities have Jason Meade’s full cooperation. There are numerous misstatements
circulating. CPD has released parts of their investigation that directly refute some of these
misstatements.

At no time did Deputy Meade mistake a sandwich for a gun. Mr. Goodson pointed his gun at
Deputy Meade. There has been confirmation that our client gave verbal commands for Mr.
Goodson to drop the gun. There have been no eye witnesses to the shooting identified. The
released 911 call makes it clear nobody witnessed the shooting from inside the house. A gun
was recovered from Mr. Goodson’s person.

Many individuals are making claims to the media that the allegation that Mr. Goodson was
pointing a gun is untrue. CPD has repeatedly asked for any witnesses to contact them. If
ANYONE has some evidence that disputes this assertion, that evidence needs to be provided to
the CIRT and federal investigators.

The community is demanding a thorough and transparent investigation, and the Goodson
family deserves that. If ANYONE has evidence relevant to the case, it should be provided.
We want to reassure our Columbus community and the nation that we are participating in the
process as governed by the Supreme Court precedence, jurisprudence, and department of
justice policies and procedures.
