BOOK EXTENSION ACTIVITY - LESSON PLAN

1. Pre-K/ CCSD K-2nd Grade/Nevada Core Standards:

 5.PK.SE.2a Participate in cooperative groups to complete a task.

2. Objectives:

 Students will be able to engage in cooperative groups to work on a task.

3. Materials/Equipment:
 Dragon plushies (2-3)
 Masking tape
 Outdoor space

4. Teaching:
A. Plan for reading the book
 Since it is an early year’s chapter book in a way. The teacher will read sections
throughout the span of 2 weeks. Which is about 15 pages a day.
 On the first day of the reading the teacher will read the cover of the book, the author, and
illustrator.
 Once reading the cover the teacher will ask the students what they believe the entire book
will be about and what adventures do they believe will happen.
 Once students have answered he teacher will begin reading.
 The teacher will have to have an enthusiastic reading voice in order to sell the fantasy in
the book
 Once a picture is shown in the book the teacher will show the class the picture.
 Once finished reading the assigned pages the teacher will ask the students what thye
believe will happen next.
 Once the next day the teacher will ask the students what they remember from the last
reading.
 This will repeat until the book is finished
 Once finished with the book the teacher will ask the students what they thought about it.
The teacher will also ask if they thought certain event were going to happen.
B. Plan for extension activity:
 Before the activity began, the teacher has laid a long path with twits and turns drawn with
chalk.
 The students will be directed outside where the handmade track is
 The teacher will explain that in the book Jaxon and his friends had to work together to
navigate their way through the realm and deliver the dragons safely and that this activity
is similar.
 Students will be instructed of the rules:
o Students will be divided into 2-3 groups. The challenge is to work as best as
possible as a group in order to get the 3 dragons to the finish line.
o It is almost like a relay race. The group will be divided into parts of the track
where students will have to run and pass the dragon onto their teammate to make
it to the finish line.
 Once the students have the hang of it there will be a couple of practice rounds.
 Then the students may go back and forth for about 3-4 rounds. Each time switching teams
 Once students are finished, they can head inside to get a drink of water and sit at their
seats.

5. Closure:
 Once students are seated inside the teacher will explain that they did
teamwork in order to get the dragons safely to the end
 The teacher will also explain that working as a team can help solve problems
and is very helpful in situations.
