learning classroom.
In the second language classroom it is important to create a space of
communication due the need of interaction between students, this not only
because the development of the speaking skills in the second language, but
also for the exchange of knowledge in the cultures related to that second
language, this by problematizing those contents and fostering an intercultural
and critical perspectives of them. For the right process of interaction, the
students’ needs to be aware about its own identity, the intercultural competence
and the required skills.
First of all, the student must be conscious of the necessity of recognizing its
own identity for being able to understand the others. According to Byram, there
are three types of identity: Social identity, which is related to the person
identifying itself in a social group; national identity, in where an individual
recognize itself and its identity in a nation, this related to the social and
language identities; and language identity, which is about the use of varieties of
language according the social group. Knowing about this and defining you in
those identities will help to identify and understand your social context, and this
will help at the moment to interact with others.
Secondly, it is necessary to foster the intercultural competences in the students.
For developing the interaction of students, they have to be aware of certain
competences that will help them. As Coperías shows in the text, “intercultural
communicative”, there is the need of the linguistic competence, sociolinguistic
competence, discourse competence, strategic competence, social competence
and socio-cultural competence; all of these for being aware of the language
forms in context, the use of strategies in the construction and interpretation of
texts, the use of signals and intentions, and the ability to handle social
situations.
