“Pinoy English & Philippine English is Legitimate, says Oxford English Dictionary Editor”

The video entitled “Pinoy English” by Mikey Bustos” is a representation of common mistake
practices in the English grammar of Filipinos. The I’ll go ahead, for a while, I’ll pass by, Close
open the lights, tuck out, and wow so blurred is an example of those common mistakes. As a
Filipino, all those following expressions are familiar to me. I used some of those without
knowing what it really meant. The “I’ll go ahead” is by far my most frequently used among
those expressions. I usually used it in school when I’m about to go home or when I’m going to
start a school report. “Tuck out” and the “blurred” is somewhat I used in the same situation in
the video. I never used the “close and open the lights” but I heard it a lot from my elementary
and high school teachers. Being aware of those common mistakes in our own expressions make
myself a little embarrassed, but at the same time relieved because no one noticed it. Even,
professionals used it without knowing the meaning or the right term to express what they want
to say. However, being aware of those, doesn’t give us the ground to be ashamed of how we
speak English but this aimed for us to be aware and be mindful of how wealthy our language is.
And as we Filipinos are being recognized globally of how distinct and fluent, we are on speaking
English. Still, this gives rise to an issue that the we have the possibility to lose the uniqueness of
the Filipino language. But both Philippine English and Filipino language play an important role in
our culture, and should exist in separate identities, being different from each other. The way we
speak English creates a distinction and variety of English. Filipinos have their own way of
speaking in English, we are recognizable in our accent and the words that we used. This
contributes in our culture by giving us an identity. Our proficiency in English also plays an
important aspect of our country’s strength, it is a major help in our economy. It widens the
people and countries we can reach and communicated with.
