Educ 376 Lesson 1 3
Educ 376 Lesson 1 3
Learning Segment Topic: Piecing together techniques of poetry, short stories, and artwork
with the outcome of a zine with the theme of celebrating YOU.
(This would be a four-week segment)
Central Focus: Students will take a peek into what a zine looks like to gain insight into what
their finished product will be. Students will then learn about various poetry techniques. We
will look at poems to pull out poetic techniques in order to gain a better understanding of
how poetic techniques are used.
Essential Question(s): Why do we have different poetic techniques? Why do we need to know
multiple poetic techniques? Can we use multiple techniques in one poem?
Pre-Assessment: Students will have prior knowledge of how to annotate and look for certain
ideas in a poem or text.
Differentiation:
For ELL students: These students will be given worksheets with vocabulary in their native
language with the following translations.
For blind or visually impaired students: Students will be paired with a buddy to read aloud
to them and answer the questions with them.
Students with dyslexia: will also be given a buddy to help read aloud to them and answer the
questions with them.
For students with ADD/ADHD/students who learn kinesthetically: Students will be placed to
work at a standing desk area if needed so they will have a better opportunity to focus
standing without having feet movement.
Academic Language Functions:
Comparing different versions of “I am” poetry.
Vocabulary:
Zine: is a small-circulation self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images.
Poetry Techniques: Poetic devices are a form of literary device used in poetry. A poem is
created out of poetic devices composite of: structural, grammatical, rhythmic, metrical, verbal,
and visual elements. They are essentially tools that a poet uses to create rhythm, enhance a
poem's meaning, or intensify a mood or feeling.
Repetition: An echo of words or sounds
Alliteration: the repetition of the first letter in a string of words
Smilie: A comparison between two things using the words “like” or “as”
Metaphor: a comparison that does not include the words “like” or “as”
