Students will be able to show an understanding of how books are organized


Students will be able to understand what the theme of the book is (in an age appropriate way)
Students will be able to share personal experiences and ideas in group discussions

Artistic Materials (crayons, paint, glue, etc..)

Construction Paper
4. Teaching (What will you do?) (5 points)

Teacher will read the title, author, and illustrator


Teacher will introduce the front, spine, and back of the book
Teacher will read the book and have the students try taking turns reading with assistance due to some of
the difficulty in the book
Teacher will ask students questions about the book: “What did you think of the book?”, “What are some
ways that you can relate to the main character?”, “What do you think is happening in the book?”
Teacher will have students depict what being American means to them

5. Closure: (2 points)

Teacher will have students guess what their peers’ art means
Teacher will have students explain / describe their art
Teacher will have students give a personal experience when they felt “left out”
