ECH 3704 REACTION KINETICS AND REACTOR DESIGN

SEMESTER 1 2020/2021

MINI PROJECT DESIGN DESCRIPTION

The purpose of this mini-project is to provide an opportunity for you to use multiple
concepts learned in ECH3704 collectively to describe and understand real reactor
situations of your choosing. This is especially important since the number of ways
reactor design is used is highly varied. Finally, this open ended project is identical
to problems you will encounter after your degree whether you go to industry as a
consultant, process engineer, entrepreneur, etc. or graduate school.

This project, composed of a short team based paper, will count for 15% of your
course grade. The project will be graded much in the same way homework is with
every team member receiving the same grade for the submitted project. The
paper is expected to be your group’s original work, and a plagiarism check will be
performed on all papers. In addition, an individual contribution grade will be added
for each team member. When the assignment is complete, each team member will
be asked to submit a team report with each team member’s contribution. The
team report will translate into an individual contribution grade that is added to the
project grade. The contribution of each team member is important and will
constitute a nontrivial portion of the grade individuals receive for this assignment.

The final project deliverables must be submitted in e-poster format by Week 14.

1.0 THE PROJECT

In the previous semesters, you were required to complete the material balances,
energy balances and other design elements for the main equipment of the whole
process to produce the required purity of ethylene. All the comments made during
the previous semesters’ presentation of design should be taken into consideration.
Additionally this semester, using the same project that you had done in the
previous courses (e.g. Material Balance, Energy Balance, Unit operation,
Integrated Design Project and etc.), you are required to design the reactors that
involved in the process. The scopes of the project should cover the following
elements but not limited to:

a) Process selection

You are required to find minimum two pathways to produce the desired
products and provide justification on the selected pathway. Your selection
should include the sustainable development criteria
b) Reaction kinetics data
You may obtain the data from the literature e.g. journals, reports and patent
(textbook data is not allowed!). Alternatively you can predict using
theoretical calculation

c) Reactor Design

Part 1
At this point, you have to design your reactors according to the conditions
that what you learnt in Chapter 1-5. You may select the initial concentration
conditions, conversion, reaction rate, constant, and etc. from the literature.
In case you could not find them, you may assume the values with
justification. The reactor analysis should use any software e.g. excel,
POLYMATH®, and Matlab and etc.

You are also required to discuss on the impact of your design based on
safety, health and environment aspects

Part 2

Will be added by Dr Hamdan later as the lecture progress

2.0 SPECIFICATIONS OF E-POSTER

The entire poster must be in A3 size. There are no specific specifications on font
type, font size and design of your poster. It is entirely up to you. But please limit
the text to about one-fourth of the poster space, and use "visuals" (graphs,
diagrams, schematics, etc.) to tell your "story." You may refer the example of
poster layout as shown in Figure 1.
