Types of research

1. Descriptive research :
Descriptive research is defined as a research method that describes
the characteristics of the population or phenomenon studied. This
methodology focuses more on the “what” of the research subject than
the “why” of the research subject.
The descriptive research method primarily focuses on describing the
nature of a demographic segment without focusing on “why” a
particular phenomenon occurs. In other words, it “describes” the
subject of the research, without covering “why” it happens.
For example , a research on what flavors of chocolate are preferred
by different people .
2. Analytical research :
Analytical research attempts to establish why it is that way or how it
came to be. It aims to understand a phenomena by discovering and
measuring causal relations among them .
For example , a research on how can the number of complaints made
by customers be reduced .
3. Applied research :
Applied research is a type of research design that seeks to solve a
specific problem or provide innovative solutions to issues affecting an
individual, group or society. It is often referred to as a scientific
method of inquiry or contractual research because it involves the
practical application of scientific methods to everyday problems.
For example , applied research to improve agricultural crop
production .
4. Fundamental research :
Basic research is a type of research approach that is aimed at gaining
a better understanding of a subject, phenomenon or basic law of
nature. This type of research is primarily focused on the advancement
of knowledge rather than solving a specific problem. Basic research is
also referred to as pure research or fundamental research. The primary
aim of this research approach is to gather information in order to
improve one's understanding and this information can then be useful
in proffering solutions to a problem.
For example , a research to discover the components of the human
DNA.
5. Quantitative research :
Quantitative research is defined as a systematic investigation of
phenomena by gathering quantifiable data and performing statistical,
mathematical, or computational techniques. Quantitative research
collects information from existing and potential customers using
sampling methods and sending out online surveys, online polls,
questionnaires, etc., the results of which can be depicted in the form
of numerical. After careful understanding of these numbers to predict
the future of a product or service and make changes accordingly.
For example , a survey to understand the amount of time a doctor
takes to tend to a patient inside the hospital .
6. Qualitative research :
Qualitative research is defined as a market research method that
focuses on obtaining data through open-ended and conversational
communication.
For example, on successfully interviewing female customers, visiting
the nearby stores and malls, and selecting them through random
sampling, it was known that the store doesn’t have enough items for
women and so there were fewer women visiting the store, which was
understood only by personally interacting with them and
understanding why they didn’t visit the store, because there were
more male products than female ones.
