Belgium is a federal state made up of three
Communities (the French Community, the Flemish Community and the German-speaking Community) and three Regions (the Brussels-Capital Region in the centre, which is officially bilingual, the Flemish Region to the north, which is Dutch-speaking and The Walloon Region to the south, which is French and German-speaking).
The main federal institutions are the federal
government and the federal parliament (with a Chamber of Representatives and a Senate). The Communities and Regions also have their own legislative and executive authority.
The three Communities in Belgium (The Flemish,
French and German ones) are defined on the basis of their language.
As Belgium is a constitutional monarchy, the latter's role is defined and
enshrined in the Constitution. The head of state is the King, who is the King of the Belgians.
