THE PAST CONTINUOUS
Use the past continuous to describe an activity that continued during a period of time in the past. ( compound sentence joined by a connector)
She was driving home when she had an accident. The car was making a funny sound while they were driving.
When she had the accident, she was driving. While they were driving, the car was making a funny sound.
Note: 1. The words when / while are often used in sentences that contrast continuing and completed actions.
a. He was talking on the phone when the storm began b. While I was living in Chile, I got married
2. The past continuous also describes two continuing actins occurring in the same period of time.
a. While she was driving, her husband was reading the newspaper. B. They were eating, and the music was playing

PHRASAL VERBS FOR TALKING ABOUT CARS.
Phrasal verbs contain a verb and a particle that together have their own meaning.
Ex: Main verb + particle = ( meaning) Turn + on = start (a machine)
Many phrasal verbs are separable. This means that a direct object noun can come before or after the particle: turn on, turn off, pick up, drop off, and fill
up are separable.
Direct object direct object
I’ll drop off the car OR I’ll drop the car off
NOTE: If the direct object is a pronoun, it must come before the particle. Ex: I’ll drop it off Did you fill them up? Where will the pick us up?
