Kinds of Test & Testing

Tests are categorized into individual test and group test. Individual test is administered to one person at
a time, this is opposite to group test which consists of test that can be administered to a large group of
people at one time.

There are different kinds of tests, may they be administered individually or to a group. The
different kinds of tests are:

The different kinds of testing are:

1. Direct Testing
Testing is said to be direct when the student is required to perform directly the skill which is to
be measured. For example: The students are asked to write a composition if we want to know
how well they can write.

2. Indirect Testing
Indirect testing attempts to measure the abilities which underlie the skills in which we are
interested. For example: A pronunciation ability test is given by asking the student to identify
pair of words which rhyme with each other.

3. Objective Testing
Scoring in this testing is objective. It won’t change across any scorer. Alternative response type
test is an example of this kind of test.

4. Subjective Testing
It requires judgment on the part of the scorer, here scoring is subjective. The grades in
subjective testing depend on the impression of the scorer. Essay type test is an example.

5. Discrete Point Testing

It refers to the testing of one element at a time, item by item. Each testing involves a particular
item. Testing simplification of fractions is one example.

6. Integrative Testing
It includes many elements in the completion of a task. Application of the four fundamental
operations in mathematic problems, as an example.

7. Norm – Referenced Testing

The kind of testing relates one student’s performance to that of other students. For example: A
student got a score in a test that placed him in the upper 5% of the students who have taken the
same test.

8. Criterion – Referenced Testing

The purpose of this testing is to classify students according to whether they are able to perform
some task satisfactorily. Those who perform the task satisfactorily “pass”, while those who don’t
“fail”. Students’ progress in relation to meaningful criteria.
Below are the kinds of tests as extracted from the book of L.P. Calmorin.
