Golden Rice
A critique paper
Golden rice has been criticized for a technical fix that does not address the real needs of farmers
and their living conditions. There are existing investigated arguments from science perspective and
assessed different aspects covering its sustainability. Broader debate occurred in surrounding the rule of
discourse in sustainability science. The strictness of conflicts around the use of GMOs became
Rice is an important crop mostly in the communities in Asia. It is the main staple of food for
majority of people. It is also part of their culture and society. Rice production is still in the hand of
subsistence farmers. Consequently, the main livelihood of people particularly in rural areas. Despite
being seen as a nutritious meal; rice does lack micronutrients which commonly eaten with a side dish
such as vegetables or meat-based proteins to compliment the lack of Vitamin A. Since rice is consumed

dud: two decades hence and the Golden rice has yet to fulfill its messianic promise of solving Vitamin A
Deficiency among kids in poor countries. Proponents, including the International Rice Research Institute
(IRRI) and its cohorts and quick to lay the blame among the farmers, consumers, environmentalists and
many others opposed to the GM rice as having blood on their “wicked” opposition has allowed the
blindness and death of millions of children who could have benefitted from this noble and humanitarian
product. But Golden Rice research and development has gone on for almost two decades now. True, the
civil society has been successful in launching campaigns against the GM rice and other genetically-
modified organisms (GMOs) that managed to halt field trials and mass propagations. But even as the
Golden Rice machinery continues to churn, Golden Rice still fails to reach the market because of its
inherent flaws and failures. And because Golden Rice is doomed to fail, the people’s resistance becomes
all the truer and necessary against this false gold and savior.
The research methodology used literature selection. Golden Rice was discussed as both
a biotechnological project and a health intervention, either as the focus of the paper or within a broader
framing. The article addressed three or more questions of coding protocol. This minimum level was set
to guarantee the validity of quantitative results. Therefore, unlike in the use of inferential statistics the
potential lack of independence of data points (e.g., papers written by the same authors are not
independent) does not invalidate or bias our analysis. Results of the cluster analysis were visualized in a
dendrogram. Furthermore, researchers conducted an indicator analysis that listed the questions of
central importance for each cluster, facilitating cluster characterization and differentiation as part of
data analysis. While the focus on sustainability themes and subthemes varied widely between clusters,
there were certain sub-themes that received less attention than others. The least addressed issues such
as dignity, food sovereignty, alternative farming methods and climate change were largely absent across
polarization towards dialogue and mutual benefit. To inform and facilitate this process, it is useful to
consider what paradigms underpin the two branches of the literature, and their influences on respective
problem framings and narratives surrounding Golden Rice. It may be fruitful to ground the Golden Rice
