FIT OA: Outdoor and Adventure

Module 4 Worksheet 2
Activity 2: Essay: Explain briefly but substantially the following.
a. Explain the difference between mountaineering and backpacking.
- Based on what I’ve read, both mountaineering and backpacking are outdoor activities
but the former one is more intense than the latter one. Mountaineering is described as
a tough kind of outdoor activity that requires high level of skills because before
engaging on mountaineering, you need to condition yourself both mentally and
physically in a way that you will be fit for the activity. Backpacking on the other hand,
is also an outdoor activity that literally gives you the vacation vibes but not the
comfortable kind of vacation, I mean it’s more adventurous than the usual out of town
escapades. It’s called backpacking because you will literally bring a backpack with you
that contains all of the necessary things needed in this outdoor activity.
b. In participating mountaineering and backpacking activities list down the things that you have
to consider from the most important to least important. Justify your answer.
- Mental and Physical Health
- Weather
- Place/Setting
- Necessities/Personal Belongings that I will bring

- I think the most important thing to consider in engaging in mountaineering and

backpacking or in any outdoor activities is your mental and physical health. Let’s say
you already have the gadgets and other things needed in these outdoor activities and
the weather is okay as well as the place that you plan to go but you’re sick or you
aren’t fit to continue the trip, everything will be meaningless if you’re not mentally and
physically healthy.
c. Given the chance to participate in an outdoor activity specifically backpacking and
mountaineering. Which would you prefer and why?
- I think I’ll choose backpacking over mountaineering because I feel like I’ll be more
comfortable doing backpacking rather than mountaineering. Yes, outdoor activities
are far from the word comfort or comfortable but the thing is that, I think I won’t
enjoy mountaineering because just like what I’ve said, it requires high level of skills
and when you say high level of skills it isn’t gained overnight, it will surely take time to
master and develop the skills needed. I chose backpacking because it is not only about
being closer to nature but it is also defined as an outdoor activity that’s close to
travelling and the good thing about this is you’ll meet locals from the place that you
chose to go and most probably enjoy their culture.
