BUKIT LARUT
4
Bukit Larut is located 1036 m above sea level and 10 km from Taiping, Perak. Founded in 1884, it
is the oldest hill resort in the country. Besides that, it is also the wettest place in the country
because it receives the highest rainfall.
The hill resort was formerly known as Maxwell Hill. It was named after William George Maxwell
who was the British Assistant Resident in Perak at that time. He felt that the beautiful views
overlooking Taiping town as well as its cool surroundings made the hill a perfect getaway for
European planters to escape the humid surroundings in their plantations. Therefore, several
bungalows were built. Back then, one could get up the hill on foot or be carried on a sedan chair by
porters.
These days, people are allowed to walk up the hill. However, it will take between three to five
hours to reach the peak. No private vehicles are allowed. Only government-owned Land Rovers are
permitted to take visitors up. The service runs every hour from 8 am to 5 pm. The 13-km journey
takes 30 minutes and a return trip is RM6 for an adult. Seats are limited during weekends and
public holidays, so call the Bukit Larut Recreation Office to book in advance.
Bukit Larut still has its original colonial bungalows and English gardens. These bungalows are
available for rent but provide only basic accommodation. Visitors can also go hiking, do some
bird-watching and enjoy its panoramic views and cool weather.

Part 4 (Question 25-34)
Spending too much time staying connected with friends and relatives through social media
6
can be detrimental to our health. Often, we do not get enough sleep at night and end up feeling
tired and sleepy the next morning.
Here are some things we can do to overcome this problem. Firstly, log out from all email accounts and
social networking sites before going to sleep. We will not be contacted if we are not online.
Next, turn off any electrical devices in the bedroom. If they are switched on, the glowing screens or
dim lights can make it harder for us to fall asleep. Moreover, hearing the notifications coming from the
devices in the middle of the night will only make matters worse.
Besides that, we must make sleep a priority. Do not answer any calls or text messages or check emails
one hour before bedtime. This should give us enough time to prepare for bed. Our body and mind need
time to wind down as bedtime approaches.
Try out these steps for a more peaceful slumber. Keep in mind that a good night's sleep is what we
need to boost our energy and to stay focused and alert the next day.

Water is the most valuable gift Mother Nature has given to humankind. 35 . The main causes of
8
water pollution are oil spills, farming wastes, industrial wastes and acid rain.
Oil spills occur when huge oil tankers have leaks. 36 . All the fish, whales, dolphins, plankton
and coral depend on clean water to survive. Many fish and plants die after such accidents as the oil spill may
take years to clean up. If the spill occurs near land, the oil will be washed up onto the beach affecting sea
birds and animals on land.
37 It may lose its ability to fly and survive. Nowadays, many kinds of pesticides are used in
farming. The rain washes pesticides and fertilizers from the fields to the rivers and oceans. Some farmers
dump animal wastes in the river as they do not know how to get rid of the waste properly. 38 .
They are acidic and very harmful to humans. Factories often dump their industrial wastes straight into the
sea. 39 . Some people even transport drums of industrial wastes and dump them
into rivers although this is against the law.
Gases and fumes from cars, factories and power stations are dissolved in the raindrops to produce a
weak acid. 40 . Acid rain can be carried from one country to another by wind.
