1. Activity/Lesson Standards: Choose one standard from either CCSD kindergarten pdf

curriculum links and locate one standard to use in your activity/lesson.

2. Objectives: Write one observable objective for your activity/lesson from the standard you
selected. The objective must be observable – one must be able to see the children perform the
objective- list, write, color, tell, show, select, etc.
Written objective format: Students will be able to [SWBAT] + Bloom’s verb
describing the active learning the children will perform. [For example: SWBAT match colors
and numbers. SWBAT draw a picture of….. SWBAT tell about a story character.]
Students will be able to show an understanding of how books are organized
Students will be able to identify familiar objects in pictures.

Students will be able to show beginning control of writing, drawing, and painting (using
various writing tools

Students will be able to model developmentally appropriate behaviors when listening to


others speak or read.
3. Materials/Equipment: List all materials needed for your activity.
 English/Swahili dictionary
 Plain/Colored Paper cut into squares
 Something to write with (pen, pencil, marker, crayon,etc)
 List of 26 English/Swahili words
 World Map / Globe
4. Teaching: Using bullet points or numbers explain the teaching sequence; What teachers
says and does and what children do to show they have met the objective.
A. Plan for reading the book-

 Teacher will greet each child as they arrive in the morning with "Jambo "(jahm-bow), or
with "Karibu,' (kah-ree-boo), meaning hello or welcome.
 Teacher will ask students if they know what I was saying as they walked in. After letting
the children guess, teacher will explain what I was saying and that the language is
Swahili
 Teacher will introduce the front, spine, and back of the book
 Teacher will tell students to listen for both similarities and differences of our alphabet
and the Swahili alphabet
 Teacher will read the book
 Teacher will ask students questions such as “what are some of the differences or
similarities of the alphabet compared to ours?”, “What words did you like from the
book?”, “Why?”

B. Plan for the extension activity:


 Teacher will have students look at the words: first word is in English and the words next
to it is translated to Swahili
 Teacher will have students say the word in English then Swahili
 Teacher will have students pick whichever word they’d like to use. If students want to
use a word that is not provided, teacher will then translate the word into Swahili for them
 Teacher will give each of the students a piece of paper for them to draw a picture that
shows what the word means.
 Teacher will have students write the word in both English and Swahili
 Teacher will have students arrange their quilt squares on the wall that is labeled “English
to Swahili: Connecting through Language with our African Friends”

5. Closure: Statement of how to end the activity that is a quick review of the lesson objective.

Teacher will explain that we have many things in common with people in a different
country, Africa. Teacher will explain that learning Swahili is an example of connecting
through language. and that words may sound different, but the meaning is still the same.
Teacher will explain that the words we learned in Swahili help us understand African
culture.
