Book Extension Activity - Lesson Plan: Department
Students will be able to show beginning control of writing, drawing, and painting (using
various writing tools
Teacher will greet each child as they arrive in the morning with "Jambo "(jahm-bow), or
with "Karibu,' (kah-ree-boo), meaning hello or welcome.
Teacher will ask students if they know what I was saying as they walked in. After letting
the children guess, teacher will explain what I was saying and that the language is
Swahili
Teacher will introduce the front, spine, and back of the book
Teacher will tell students to listen for both similarities and differences of our alphabet
and the Swahili alphabet
Teacher will read the book
Teacher will ask students questions such as “what are some of the differences or
similarities of the alphabet compared to ours?”, “What words did you like from the
book?”, “Why?”
5. Closure: Statement of how to end the activity that is a quick review of the lesson objective.
Teacher will explain that we have many things in common with people in a different
country, Africa. Teacher will explain that learning Swahili is an example of connecting
through language. and that words may sound different, but the meaning is still the same.
Teacher will explain that the words we learned in Swahili help us understand African
culture.
