Testing terms
Valid test: measures what it is supposed to measure.
Reliable test: has consistent and trustworthy results when administered on
different occasions.
Objective testing.
Subjective testing.
Washback.

2. Cons about testing


Children can get nervous or have a bad day and not be able to demonstrate their
knowledge.
A bad grade can demotivate a child.
Can lead to unhealthy class competition.
Studying for the grade not for the learning.
Teacher making a test that includes things that students have not studied.
Too much focus on accuracy and memory.
Aim at finding out what students do not know.

3. Errors and error correction


What is a mistake? It is an instance of the learner’s language that does not
conform to accepted norms of usage, and which is attributed to incomplete or
faulty learning.
Some reasons for making mistakes:
o Overgeneralisation: Apply a grammar rule to everything even when it’s
not correct in all the cases.
o L1 interference: Copying the model of the mother tongue (grammar and
vocabulary).
