and Percents (Day 1)

Lesson Plan for Grade 6, Mathematics
Prepared by Cathy Simpson

OVERVIEW & PURPOSE

This lesson plan has been created for a POP Cycle observation for my FOTIP in 2020.

EDUCATION STANDARDS

CCSS.6.Rp.3.c - Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100 (e.g., 30% of a quantity
means 30/100 times the quantity); solve problems involving finding the whole, given a
part and the percent.

OBJECTIVES

Students will be able to use a Base 10 system to turn fractions into decimals and
percentages.

MATERIALS NEEDED

1. Computer
2. Zoom
3. Pear Deck
4. Notebooks

VERIFICATION

Steps to check for student understanding

1. I will use Pear Deck to receive real-time feedback from students and observe their

1
work on during the lesson
2. I will utilize the chat to talk to the whole class or individual students. Students are
able to privately message me questions during the lesson
3. I will use visual cues (thumbs up, sideways, down) and feedback slides to gauge
student understanding

Agenda

Warm up Activity to activate prior knowledge. Students will type their answers using
Pear Deck. (5-10 minutes)

Class discussion using benchmark fractions to identify amounts that are greater than or
less than 0, ½, 1, etc. Students will use the microphone or chat box to share their
thinking. (10 minutes)

Matching activity using fractions and a number line. Students will have to mark where
each fraction goes using the drawing tool in Pear Deck. (10-15 minutes)

Brain Break

Introduction to Base 10 Number system. Students will review their prior knowledge
about place value. Students will physically write new information in their notebooks.
(5-10 minutes)

Show decimals as fractions in context of place value, and identify which fractions can be
turned into decimals. Students will look at tables of information using Base 10
relationships and attempt to identify the patterns and use the chat or microphone to
share their thinking. (15-20 mins)

Mark a 10ths strip to show how it can become a 100ths strip. Students will use the
drawing tool in Pear Deck. (10 minutes)

Closing - Students will summarize their understanding with an exit ticket Check Up.
