FUEL CONSUMPTION .
Objectives :

• Determine the fuel mass flow rate

• Explain the factors affecting fuel consumption
• Study the variation of fuel mass flow rate as a function of engine speed

INTRO :

The specific fuel consumption is an indicator that represents the ratio of the fuel mass flow rate

into the combustion chamber to the engine output brake power.

While the specific air consumption is an indicator that represents the ratio of the air mass flow

rate into the combustion chamber to the engine output brake power.

Brake power can be defined as the power available at the crankshaft. Since it is measured with

the help of brake dynamometer it is referred as brake power. It may be input power or output.

In case of IC engine it is output power and in case of compressor it is input power.

Data table :
Result table :

Sample of calculation :

Ѵ҅ fuel=76*(1.6667*10^-8) =1.26692*10^-6(m3/s)

M fuel=ρ fuel* Ѵ҅ fuel =740*1.26692*10^-6=0.00937521(Kg/s)

SFC=M fuel/Pb=0.000937521/5.4=0.000173615 (Kg/s. Kw)

For fig.1 shows the relation between the engine speed (rpm) and the Fuel mass Flowrate(kg/sec) .
For the fig.2 it shows the relation between the engine speed and the SFC (kg/sec.kw)

Discussion:

When your speed dips and bursts, you use more fuel, , than you need to. Tests have shown that varying
your speed up and down between 75 and 85 km per hour every 18 seconds can increase your fuel use by
20% This bad habit is threefold – driving too fast, accelerating too quickly

Worse fuel consumption due to load to bad driving, road condition and excessive load. Using an equation
for the displacement of engine.
