MKD prototype test rests

V. Senaj, MKD/MKB upgrade review, 15/06/2018

Goals and means of MKD/MKB upgrade
• Goals:
• Reduction of the probability of erratic triggering
• Increase of the maximum current energy (output current) form 7 Tev to 7.5 TeV (testing up
to 8 TeV necessary)
• Reduction of internal heating and dust generation
• Improvement of maintainability
• Means:
• Modifications to GTO stack with the goal to reduce E-field under 1.5 MV/m at 29 kV
• Increasing of principal capacitor value (+18%) of MKD & MKB generators thus reducing the
nominal voltage (- 9%); Cons - proportional increase of MKD rise time (+ 9%)
• Modifications to triggering circuit (PTM + TT + cabling) to partially compensate for the rise
time increase and to improve cabling and connectors reliability
• Ross relay energy saver – reduction of RR internal heating and 50 Hz hum and vibrations
• Capture of the particle generated by mechanical friction of the manual earthing switch
Test results: MKD + 3 rd capacitor
• Cost effective solution of capacitance increase – adding 3rd capacitor (0.24 uF) in
parallel with 2 existing capacitors (2 x 0.69 uF)
• HV test of 240 nF capacitor in oil at equivalent of 9 TeV during 8 weeks - OK
• Test results as expected; the nominal current achieved with ~ 9% lower voltage; current
rise time and T_del increase by ~ 200 ns; 7.5 TeV measurement done for the first time
Test results - new trigger transformer
• In house developed TT with strongly reduced leakage inductance; the goal – approaching
to the producer recommended triggering conditions: 2 kA peak; 5 kA/us slew rate
• Critical parameter – voltage holding capability of the transformer moulding – first
prototype failed by breakdown due to non respecting of moulding procedure
• Under the same condition – new TT achieves 3x higher current
Test results – fully modified MKD
• Reduction of T_del up to 200 ns (modification of Vbias at lowest energy necessary) – reduction of beam losses
in case of AD
• T_rise < 2.75 us
Test results – fully modified MKD
• Reduction of T_th up to 250 ns
• Abort gap needed (T_del max – T_th min) ~ 3.09 – 0.33 = 2.76 us
Test results - new trigger transformer
• HV testing in oil up to equivalent of 9 TeV during 8 weeks – some minor self healing
observed
Test results – reliability run
• GTO stack: sparking test at equivalent of 8.5 TeV – OK
• TT sparking test at equivalent of 9 TeV (8 weeks) – OK
• PTM - ~ 10k pulses – OK
• Full MKD generator: ~ 7k pulses at 450 GeV, 2 k pulses at 7 TeV, 1.2k pulses at 7.5 TeV –
OK
• All reliability done with prototypr PTM
• PTM prototype with 100 nF, Imax ~ 750 A
• PTM prototype with 150 nF, Imax ~ 920 A
• PTM Pre-series with 150 nF, Imax ~ 980 A but output current delayed by up to 50 ns
• Recommended PTM capacitor value ~ 120 nF
• Source of delay in pre-series to be found
Voltage transient at GTO stack bottom
• Transients up to 780 v p-p observed
– Isolation amp rated to 5 kV (its
DC/DC PS to 3 kV)
• No problem sofar
