Hello everyone,
My name is Nicola Janse van Rensburg. I am from Calgary but was born in South Africa
and have been living in Lethbridge while completing my degrees. I am writing this letter to you
to introduce myself as your student teacher from the University of Lethbridge. I am currently
enrolled in my fourth year of studies in the combined degree program (Bsc in Kinesiology, Bed
in Physical Education.) I am extremely excited to work with you all and get to know everyone at
your School!
Growing up, I developed a love for teaching and interacting with children, through my
involvement in coaching, and tutoring. I grew up in a very large family, which means I have a lot
of cousins, and I am lucky enough to be one of the oldest. Because of this I have always been
involved with their academics and all their extracurricular activities. Since I was young, I have
always had a love for sports. played soccer and
basketball until the end of high school, and I even
had the privilege of coaching those sports. I can
not wait to discuss some of these interest with you
all. Not only did I have a big love for sports, but I
also love art. Watercolour painting has always
been a hobby of mine. Along with painting, music
has also been an important part of my life, I have
found ways to express myself through singing and
having fun with songs. Another joy of mine is
animals, and I have always loved spending time
with our dogs, Lady, and Truffles.
What I hope to bring to your classroom are skills which I have acquired
throughout the years with my involvement with youth, the Ed 2500 program, and just the general
experiences I have had. Being involved with my younger cousins, coaching, running soccer
summer camps, and volunteering as a lunchroom supervisor in a Calgary elementary school
helped me gain insight as to what I believe learning environments can look like. They have
shown me all the different ways children learn best, and how to implement that into teaching. I
hope to create a safe and engaging classroom for you all. I
believe that to have a well-rounded classroom there is an
importance in establishing an inclusive learning environment,
and to establish this I hope to demonstrate a level of compassion,
professionalism, positivity and kindness to help establish these
inclusive environments. I am excited to learn the skills and
techniques required to be a successful, organized, and engaging
teacher in a classroom. I am very eager to learn all that there is
about becoming a teacher. A goal I have for myself would be
that by the end of my practicum experience I hope to become
confident with building effective and open relationships. Through this I hope to spread
knowledge and have a better understanding of the difference between equality and fairness.

I would like to thank you for providing me with this opportunity to gain new insight on
what it is truly like to be a teacher. I am looking forward to learning what it is like to work, learn
and have fun with all of you. I hope I can be as much help to you as you will be providing me
with some of the most valuable information for this practicum experience. I will work hard to be
interactive, engaging and have fun with all of you. See you all soon!
